Recruiting Question

I think most of us recognize we have some great recruits coming in next year, and combined with this year's class (inc Cokie) we've got a large and talented group that will be together for three years. We also have Little signed for 2012, as well as two of the top players for 2013 (Adams, and Terry who is one of the best posts in the class). But I'm wondering if we are also looking to sign a top post prospect for 2012; we seem deep at every other position, and we're fine in the post next season with both AG and Cokie. And Cokie will be joined by Terry during her senior season in 2013, but once AG graduates that leaves us just Cokie in 2012. If we sign a post in that class Cokie will have help that year, as will Terry when Cokie graduates.

The problem is there aren't any big name Texas posts in 2012. There are 4 in-state guards in the Hoopgurlz Top 25, but all of the available posts are out-of-state and their bios don't list any schools being considered at this time; so, no way to tell who we might be after, or who might be interested in us.

Available posts in the Hoopgurlz top 50:

3. Rachel Hollivay - 6'4 - MS
11.Imani Stafford - 6'5 - CA
21.Malina Howard - 6'3 - OH
36.Taylor Manuel - 6'3 - MO
37.Ariel Butts - 6'3 - GA
47.Dominique Brooks - 6'4 - IL

Does anyone know if we're going after any of these players, or if the Horns are on any of their shortlists? I do see a Missouri player at # 36 and obviously we've done well there in the past. As happy as I am with the players we have coming in I think a strong post for 2012 is one potential missing piece.

I don’t know anything about the players that you mention. My completely uneducated guess would be one more guard and one more post. My cheat sheet says the 2012-2013 season currently looks like this….

Juniors
Cokie Reed (RS)
Anne Marie Hartung
Tiffany Moore
Chelsea Bass
Chassidy Fussell
Kayla Brewer
Shanice McKoy

Sophomores
Cassie Peoples
Brady Sanders
Ronnisha Major
Nneka Enemkpali

Freshmen
Peyton Little

I would think that part of the recruiting dilemma would be that there are no seniors in this group. The good news is that they all should be back. That bad news is that they should all be back. With Adams and Terry in 2013 that would already put us at 14. Given that, how many more can we add in 2012?

I know that scholarships are sometimes split and not always full rides, and I don’t know the status of current players or those already signed. I would think that a big time recruit would be able to demand a full ride…….Sorry, I don’t have anything but more questions.

Given that we will have 7 guards on the 2012-2013 squad and at least one scholarship available that we know of it seems a top post prospect should be a priority, but that's just my opinion.

I agree that if we sign one more, and only one more, that IMO it would make sense to have that be a post. I hope it is possible to sign two more. But, I don’t know how the scholarships break down or if we have any other targets for 2013. When the numbers start to be limited the coaches may just go with “best available.” ….I really don’t have a clue. I just have a good time thinking about it.

First, I don't think that WBB is a sport where the schollies are split.

Second, in 2011-12, posts will be Ashley, Cokie, Anne Marie, and Nneka with Kayla and Ronisha both capable of playing inside. In 2012, that group minus Ashley will return. While I hope that we do sign a 6-3 or taller post in 2012, since only Cokie and Anne Marie will be at that height or taller, the coaches can afford to be selective and not just sign anyone. Of course, they could sign another guard or two!

I know that with Coach Conradt there were some players who did not have a full ride. That may not technically be a split scholarship, and may not be something that Coach G does. That has also been several years so the rules could have changed. I THINK some or all of those players did also have grants to help cover expenses. I would like to know how it really works and if there is any difference from one school or coach to another.

I agree with Babhorn. They don't split scholarships for basketball. The women are allowed 15 scholarship players at any one time, and that means 15 individuals who can be on scholarship for playing basketball at the University.

So maybe it was that not all 15 are full? I know that I talked to several players over the years who said that they had a partial.

I always figured all 15 schollies were full scholarships. Never heard anything to the contrary but I never talked to the coaches or players about it so can't say that that is the way it has always been or is now.

Anybody going to the Coach G Show on the 23rd? Maybe someone could ask?

I'm pretty sure I heard Coach Conradt explain this once. But, it has been so many years I can't really remember what she said.

I looked at the NCAA rule book and couldn't find specific referece to split or partial scholarships, but the language used (15 total "counters") made me think partials might be okay. Anyway, I found this on another site...if the information is valid then splitting is fine. BTW the NCAA rules inidcated there haven't been any changes to scholarship rules since the early 90's (if I read it correctly that is):

Number of Scholarships
•The NCAA establishes rules on the number of basketball scholarships that member schools are allowed to offer. For Division I, men's basketball programs are allowed to offer 13 scholarships and women's basketball programs are allowed to offer 15 scholarships. For Division II, men's and women's basketball programs are limited to 10 scholarships.
Scholarship Awards
•What schools are allowed to offer in their basketball scholarships varies. Division I colleges are allowed to offer basketball scholarships that pay for all of tuition and fees and room and board. These so-called full-ride scholarships provide student-athletes with a virtual free education, but the NCAA also allows the university to offer partial scholarships. A half-scholarship pays only half of tuition and room and board. By awarding half-scholarships, schools are allowed to split single scholarships between multiple athletes.

Interesting read from the NCAA, but if a coach realistically only is going to play 8-10 players a majority of the minutes as seems to be the case, why would they split the scholarships?

Doesn't make sense when you can offer a full ride to fifteen players.

Let's see if I can do this from my blackberry...

Reading around it appears that a scholarship is a scholarship no matter what it includes and there is a limit of 15. But, scholarships can be full or partial. That is up to the school. Sometimes not all 15 are fully funded. Since all of my conversations were from quite a few years ago that certainly could have since changed at Texas. We seem to be in a time here that money should not be a problem.

I thought this was all interesting...
