Great start this year, and we're only in February. However, does anyone feel that we're going to fill up so quickly this year that we're going to miss several major talents? consider the breakdown:

QB (2) Connor Wood, Case McCoy. Done.

RB (2) Traylon Shead. You would think we would wait for Lache Seastrunk. Dontae Williams, despite some serious talent, may be slow played or not get an offer. Of course, you still have some pretty good packs in Princeton Collins and DJ Jones around.

WR (4) John Harris, Chris Jones, Ross Apo. You'd have to think we'll wait for Darius White. Trovon Reed and Demarco Cobbs are looking less likely by the minute. I'm not sure we look at any more beyond that.

TE (1) Darius Terrell. I think we're done.

OL (3) Trey Hopkins, Dom Espinosa. Jake Matthews has an offer. Evan Washington probably won't get an offer unless Matthews declines.

DE (2) Greg Daniels. Reggie Wilson is looking less optimistic at this point. Jackson Jeffcoat should be priority #1.

DT (3) Taylor Bible, DeAires Cotton, Ashton Dorsey. Done.

LB (3 or 4) Aaron Benson, Tevin Jackson. I thought 4 initially, but my confidence in Jordan Hicks isn't as high as before.

DB (4) Carrington Byndom, Ahmad Dixon, Bryant Jackson, Hopefully Adrian White joins the fold.

ATH (1) Adrian Phillips. I think we're done.

2/28 update
After seeing the new offers being put out, it is apparent that this will indeed be a big class. My initial thought of 24 was probably not off by much.. we might take 25 at this rate. There's no way the coaches stop at 20-22, when we have 15 in the fold, with guys like Jeffcoat, Wilson, Seastrunk, Matthews, D White, A White, Hicks, and Cobbs still out there.

3/1 update
class shapes up even more at this point. look like we're holding out for the big boys primarily now...

Times are good. This one has started as good, possibly better than last year. I believe class of '09 was Mack's 3rd best on signing day, and 2010 has momentum to be a top quartile class.

I have an idea that Mack's not gonna let Texas potentially get burned at a need position like running back. Shead's in the burnt orange house with his verbal, and, while Texas may keep their offer on the table with Seastrunk a while, I think the Horns won't slow recruit Dontae Wilson if they think he's a keeper. Princeton Collins is also a nice option for the Horns.

There will be a place for Jeffcoat until the end, but I think Texas goes after Reggie Wilson and Okafor from Houston full tilt.

I just don't see the Horns being left in a position to be hurt by being jilted at the end, as has happened in the past. I think this could wind up being one of Mack's top three classes.

our rb recruiting is really starting to bother me. we are awesome. we have good linemen. our depth chart is favorable (we have a lot of bodies, but none of our guys are going to scare a stud into looking elsewhere). aggy sucks pig balls. ou has a pinhead jackass of a coach and a fan base comprised of kid rock and toby keith look-alikes. aggy and the methmouths seem to bring in stud rbs every year. we get one every 4 years. i like whaley, and i think he could be great, but dangit, it sure would be nice to bring in a 5* Texas back for once.

I am very interested to see what we do at WR and RB. If we offer Apo, do we wait to offer Deandrew White and others until Darius White, Trovon Reed, and Demarco Cobbs announce their decision?

Looks like Shead will get an offer and I expect him to commit soon. We will wait on Seastrunk. The question for me is whether or not we offer someone else as well.

Something tells me we may offer Princeton Collins. Texas has had luck recruiting Westwood players before, and Collins is a very good running back.

i'm hoping that the talk of wilson liking ou more than us isn't true. at first glance, it would seem that wilson and texas would be the natural fit. this is starting to look like several of the last couple of classes, where we start great and think we're going to have a usc type 5-6 5 star class, only to lose 3 of the top 4 guys out of state (mostly to ou). even if we don't get seastrunk, it seems he would likely go to lsu or usc and their logjam rb field. but if ou manages to get jeffcoat and wilson, to go along with rj washington and the kid from nevada last year, garrett gilbert better be watching colt's films on running for his life (not that i'm discounting our recent OL recruits... )

as for wr, i'm getting less confident about cobbs and us, and the same can be said at lb with hicks. it seems we will more likely try for 3 OL and 3 DT.

RB - If we can get Shead and either Collins or Jones my feelings will not be hurt at all. I don't see Seastrunk as the guaranteed Messiah.

WR - Darius White is at Ok. St this weekend. Don't be suprised if he and his buddies from FW Dunbar commmit. We have a real shot at Apo and DeAndrew White. Cobbs is the type you take no matter what.

With Bible and Cotton we may be done at DT. The coaches liked Guy, he just had other plans.

Seastrunk isn't the Messiah, but he would seem to be the biggest key to our offensive deficiencies. with Collins and Jones i'm not sure we're getting much more than what we have on campus with Newton and Hills.

I could see the Dunbar guys go Okie Lite, except for D White. I still think he's a horn all the way.

You'd think we'd be done at DT, but with Humphrey's illness I am much more confident that the coaches will go after 1 more.. probably Steward.

colt, have you heard anything about whether texas is showing any interest into joe okafor at houston bellaire?

no i haven't heard much, though i suspect that he might be someone that we would look at closer if wilson does go to the thieves.

The staff appears to be going with in-state guys that want to play at Texas and are ready to commit today. That said, we obviously will bringing in a very big class. Let me see if I can capture the outstanding offers we have. From today's Jr. Day - Torrea Peterson (DT), Apo (WR), Jones (WR), Matthews (OL), Cobbs (WR). We also have offers out to Jeffcoat (DE), Seastrunk (RB), Wilson (DE), D.White (WR), Corey Nelson (LB), Adrian White (DB), Hicks (LB), Reed (WR). That is 13 more offers I am aware of.

With 16 verbals our staff has obviously written off 4 or 5 of the offers currently out there. It seems to me like C.Jones and Peterson will commit. Let's assume Apo also commits. That brings you to 19 commits. Let's also assume we get A.White, which has been rumored as a big Texas lean, bringing you to 20.

That would essentially leave you the "5-star list" - Matthews, Cobbs, Jeffcoat, Seastrunk, Wilson, D.White, Hicks, Nelson, and Reed. That's 9 guys, with maybe 4 or 5 spots. I think it is safe to assume we could write off Nelson and Reed. That gets you to 7 "5-star" caliber guys for those final spots.

Somebody check my math, but that is what I am concluding. Looks like we will be riding out it for those guys for the next 11 months, just can't see many more offers going out. Colt, what are your thoughts?

i generally agree with you HL. from my understanding Peterson may end up with OU. i think Apo still is a question with his Mormon religion, and BYU could be a player. if we take those 2 off... and count 17 as jones, my guess at this time, with the 5 star guys as a crapshoot:
17 commits... plus... A white, D white.. 19. i will go ahead and say we get apo as well.. 20. for some reason i think we have a shot at matthews... 21. call me negative, but i'm not that optimistic about the rest. i would say jeffcoat next after that as a possibility. my hopes of hicks and cobbs go down every day, and i think we will end up missing on both of these guys. if anything, cobbs is a better chance than hicks. after that, i could see seastrunk as a possibility, but the longer it draws out, i could see a princeton collins or dontae williams getting an offer. wilson seems to be slipping towards the ou side but we're not out of it yet. reed is a reach, unless connor wood can do some magic. nelson is basically off the table.

not trying to rain on the parade, but this talk of 'mack's greatest class' possibility just doesn't seem realistic. i'll try to dig up some past stats, but this is starting to look like a 2008 class with the top 3 guys going OOS (in that case, the worst possible scenario to OU), possibly like 2007 with the top 2 guys OOS.

in the worst case scenario i just don't want OU to get BOTH jeffcoat and wilson. i think the odds are against that, but it's not improbable. at least if seastrunk is a miss, he'll go USC or LSU.

As great as our class is thus far...we cant lose out on all of these blue chippers:

Lache Seastrunk
Jackson Jeffcoat
Darius White
Adrian White
Jordan Hicks
Demarco Cobbs
Trovon Reed
Reggie Wilson
Cory Nelson

With Wood, Hopkins, Bible, Dixon and Benson, this is already a top 10 national class as is. If we want it to reach top 5 we need to get at least 2 or 3 of the list above. Getting 4 or more of that list and we will be fighting it out for #1 again.
