RECRUIT EVALUATION

Just a few observations after watching a replay of the Auburn- Utah St game. Emory Blake was not considered good enough to play at UT? His stats are better than Mike Davis. 9 TDs to 2.

And why did we not recruit Luck?

I know it's not an exact science, but what happened with these two guys?

I may not be remembering this right, but it seems like Luck committed very early to Stanford. I'm not sure he was ever interested in Texas. However, as I say, that may be incorrect but I think Stanford was his first choice.

So wee were too timid to offer? Or, didn't feel we could compete?

OR, didn't want to hurt our offer to commitment ratio?

Don't know if he was a Stanford lock or not. He was obviously interested in Texas since he came up for junior day. He was also high on ND until they got Dayne Crist that year.

No one knows what the staff was thinking regarding Luck. They ended up not taking a QB in that class. Maybe they didn't think any QB was worth offering that year or were holding out for Gilbert the following year.

Heck.. the staff didn't offer Mike Davis when he attended the first junior day. They ended up offering him much later in the year when he was committed to LSU. It does suck to see TX guys like Luck, LaMichael James, and Darron Thomas tearing it up in another conference considering those were the key positions we were struggling with last season.

btw.. Emory Blake was offered a greyshirt.

This is what really gets me too, I just watched Morris from Allen make every throw perfectly aside from two.
Nothing against Connor Brewer, I'm glad he is coming but how the heck do we go out of state with this behemoth in state ready to play?
Maybe this has already been covered but we just missed another and dang it, he is headed to the SEC!

I like that HarsinWhite will have two sets of eyes to evaluate the offense players going forward and giving imput to Mack. I trust that Harsin will have the feel for what skills will excel in his offense. Major has proven to be a nasty recruiter.

Like a few have mentioned, recruiting is an inexact science. It's easy to rank prospects on the measurables but how well he fits in is another matter.
20/20 hindsight says we should have offered Luck over GG. But at that time, they were both lights out QB prospects. GG was a local boy who won state championships and it was a no brainer to offer him.

Who knows how Luck would have fared last year in Greg Davis's slow developing WR bubble screen with no blocking offense. But in retrospect I think Luck would be well ahead of Gilbert in getting Harsin's offense.
I do agree that the RB recruiting with Whaley was a head scratcher. But Major seems to be recruiting well on that end.

But sometimes recruiting classes pan out based on how good the coaching is. On the offensive side, GD was an albatross that let talent go stale. Also, we missed on Jake Matthews partly because of his brother going to A&M but what didn't help was Bruce Matthews having reservations in how McWhorter was developing talent.

But, it seems like the '10, '11, and the '12 classes are going to give us the best collection of talent since the '99-'02 classes did.
