Recruit an additional QB?

With the possibility that Ash does not play more football, I think we should look for an additional QB recruit, possibly a JC guy. We will have zero experience next year if Ash reties or is hurt.

And, all we have behind him will be a soph, who may really be a tight end, and a true freshman.

Mack has, once again, lost focus-ness.

Ash is to play football again, right? At least news today suggested as much. Likely to get an extra year as well. He's been cleared. There is a thread in the main forum.

LHN said he will be ready fro Spring ball, so it appears he plans on trying to come back.
Having said that, not sure if Saban will recruit another QB or not.

Until he gets clobbered again. Hope it does not happen, but if it does we will be playing a guy with no experience and less practice reps. Not ideal.

I heard last week that Texas was looking for potential QBs in the JC ranks. No source given, just rumored. But it only makes sense to take a look and I have no doubt that Mack and the Player Personnel Dept have had that in mind for awhile.

Not a bad approach - bring in a decent JC QB as backup or replacement for Ash to allow Swoopes and Heard another year of maturing but only if you intend to get Swoopes some meaningful reps in a game before the final minutes. Otherwise, just put him or Heard in and see how they do.

Timing is difficult though. A JC QB will want to commit in December and be on campus for the Spring knowing they will have a real chance to play. Ash intends to return and is expected to do so in the Spring. If Ash returns and stays healthy, JC QB will be disgruntled on the bench.

Why do we need to recruit another QB? Mack's recruiting expertise cannot be questioned. Haven't we gotten a commitment from one of the top ten HS QBs each year for how many years? Look at how many have led us to National Championships. Look at how many are starters in the NFL.

Nope, Mack's policy of "commit to us and we won't take another QB" is working just fine for us and like our strength and conditioning program should never be questioned.

If you disagree, consider the turmoil of having competition for the QB position. We would never want that, otherwise the second QB might want playing time.

Sabre you are sarcastically question Mack on Qb's?
He has two of the greatest EVER to play college football.
Do you care what they accomplish in the NFL? If so we are lad you are not an advisor here.
Any program in America and several in Canada would have taken Garrett Gilbert over anyone in their class. It just did not work out.
To question Mack on recruiting QB's is to question Jimmy Johnson on draft picks in the early 90's.
Go ahead and do it, but time only will tell.
OBTW we have another big time guy at back up, and have a commit by a pretty decent kid from Guyer too.

#2, I'll gladly give you Vince Young, although until Mack and GD were convinced to let Vince be Vince, it might not have worked out. Colt was recruited as a backup. If I remember correctly (we've had so many QBs leave, it's hard to keep track) Jevan Sneed was supposed to be the next great thing. Colt beat him, which was unexpected but worked out great. Mack has been so afraid of having a QB controversy that he never wanted two competitive QBs on the roster. So last year the "controversy" was between two average QBs. I truly hope that Ash does not come back. He is not pro football material, and I really would not want him to risk another serious head injury that could affect the rest of his life.

what is the point? how many guys have we lost due to transfer due to overrecruiting and not giving the other guys on the roster a real shot. We have Swoopes and then Heard coming in next year. I think you need 3 but we have Overstreet as 3rd guy in case and then maybe Ash comes back.

I guess I'm in the minority but I think Ash returns. Sometimes, smart kids see the writing on the wall and know that this might be as good as it gets. He's not going to leave because he knows that this is probably his only real shot.

I think the concussion testing has also gotten a lot more strict than it has been... not even 5 years ago.

I can't imagine Texas looking to Mayfield at this point. Swoopes is already well beyond Mayfield with time in the system and has shown a few sparks when allowed on the field. Ash's future will not be known until at least the Spring when he returns to practice. Also, Heard is on the way as a highly touted QB.

I am not sure what control TT has regarding where Mayfield can transfer if he decides to leave TT. Since he is not on scholarship, he may not have to be "released" to go elsewhere. Usually, schools release scholarship players with the caveat that they do not play for a conference member of the school they are leaving. But Mayfield would have to sit out a year at a D1 school so there is no immediate benefit to Texas.

If Texas goes after another QB, it should be someone that can have an immediate impact like a JUCO transfer or a Graduate QB with remaining eligibility.

Ash may go out after the first hit of the first game. His initial injury was that serious. I just hope that the staff (whoever it will be) doesn't put all their eggs in one basket.

Definitely need another QB. I have no problem with going to the JUCO ranks. Auburn plucked their QB NIck Marshall from JUCO so their are some gems to be found. QB evaluation needs to be looked into with a manifying glass because this is where Brown went downhill after Colt. That was the beginning of the end and it started with QB play.

Seems like Heard is looking to reopen his recruitment if we don't get someone he likes. If we hire anyone other than a well-known offensive guy for the job, we probably will be forced to recruit an "additional" QB, or really a first one if Heard bolts.

I think we were spoiled by having studs like Snead and Kinne transfer out of here. We're superstars' first choice. Well, we don't have that luxury any longer. The last time we had a capable backup with meaningful playing time who could actually sling the ball for a D-I team, we were beating Michigan in the Rose Bowl and didn't need the backup. 9 years ago.

Losing Heard would be huge. I'm curious if you saw this somewhere and would you please provide the link if you did.

Our new coach should make it his first priority of convincing Heard to stay committed to Texas. This kid is special.

“I’m pretty sure I’m with Texas. It’s more than just one person and I’ll just be patient and see who they bring in. I wish Coach Brown the best. I’m just going to finish my high school career and see who they bring in.”

From a couple of sources, including Rivals.

I know I'm probably reading more into it than most, but "pretty sure" doesn't sound sold. Neither does "I'm going to... see who they bring in."

I read where he is concentrating on the playoffs so maybe that's why he seems distant. Or maybe I'm just trying to convince myself.

I am not surprised and have no heartburn about any recruit that is waiting for the new HC to be named before confirming his desire to be a Horn. In fact, it seems like the reasonable thing to do.

Along with that, a new coach may have completely different priorities regarding the recruits and should not be required to make good on an offer made by Mack.
