I'm getting mr. horngal a gps for his birthday and I understand Garmin is the best. But there's tons of Garmins to choose from. Which one is the best (value and features)?
Get one with good "text to speech" capabilities. It makes a big difference when you are trying to watch traffic, and need the voice directions.
Also, check what maps are loaded, comparing that to where you will be driving. Some have all of North America, some do not.
Messages on traffic and bluetooth capability are not that big a deal to me - but they might be to you. if you live in Dallas or Houston, traffic updates might make sense.
In other words, get the bells and whistles you need - or you will regret it later.
I got the 350 and it's good. I sprung for the "Maps 2008" update cd. Cost like 80 bucks. I don't know what might be on the update that's not already in the base unit, but there's so much new construction that even the "Maps 2008" is not perfect. For example, you'll be taking a fly over that's new...just been striped, and the Garmin will show you driving in a field. "Jill" will announce that she's "recalculating route" a couple of times, and eventually you get there. Not a huge deal, but something to get used to.
We have the Garmin Nuvi 350 and it's great - we use it on road trips and my wife uses it to cut through DC for work. It usually gives you enough warning as well in terms of upcoming turns. I'd recommend it.
I have the 260 and would highly recommend it since
1. Text to speech - minimum requirement
2. Nuvi series is much thinner
3. frequently on sale for 199
