Recommend some boots

I have been toying with the idea of getting a nice pair of boots, but after walking into a western wear place in the West End tonight, I found that I know about as much about boots as I do fluid dynamics. The prices ranged from $299 - $1500, so I figured I would get input here before making the plunge.

Thanks in advance!

I assume you're talking about cowboy boots? I don't know much about those but I do know that the best way to wear them is with the jeans tucked in the boot

Go to Leddy's in the North Side/Stockyards area of Fort Worth and get you a custom pair. Otherwise, if you want off the shelf, Lucchese.

First question: Do you want actually do something in them or just look semi-not cheesy?

Can't go wrong with basic black Justin ropers, however no matter what brand boot you get, flashy is out (less bling = more) & your "usual" jeans size should be a +2" long. I'm strictly a Wrangler 13mwz guy.

I do my boot shopping @ Cavender's; they are easily found online.

Luchesse's are fine if they'll never touch dirt. Too dressy for me. I'll stick with Double H, Ariat or Justin.

There is some very good input here, an I appreciate it. I just want something I can wear with jeans, but if they get scuffed, it's alright. Nothing dressy. I found many Lucchese boots, but like I said, I wanted some input first. On some boots, the leather felt very thin and I 'm afraid it will tear, especially after dropping so much $$$. Some of them had leather that was considerably thicker.

Some of the ones I was interested in are these:

i like luchesse 2000's (great fit, less $$$ than the classics which are still hand stitched) with the taller heel. have a pair of the full quill ostrich and a pair of lizards that i wear all the time.

If you want a good pair for not a lot of dough, Leddy's (which has been mentioned) is probably the place to go. Go there and check out their Vaquero line. They run about $299 in either black or brown but they have a lot of features that more expenses boots have. I know someone that has a pair as well as some custom pairs and he has been very impressed. Get a pair, see if you like wearing them, and if you do then order a pair of customs.

If I may make a shameless family plug, go to Fincher's in the Ft. Worth Stockyards. My family owns the store. Nolan Ryan and George Strait have shopped there in the past. I don't know much about their cost compared to other stores, but just wanted to promote my family.

I suggest you to hold off on buying in your area if you plan on coming to the game in El Paso. You will pay up to 50% less by buying at one of the many boot outlets here. I own around 20 pair of boots, hell, its all I wear other than tennis shoes occasionally. Justin, Lucchese, Dan Post are but a few of the outlets. There are also many independent boot makers all over town.

For a 1st pair of boots you can't go wrong with Justin ropers especially if you are going to do something while wearing them. My suggestion is to buy a pair of shark instead of cowhide and soak them in a bathtub of water for about 30 mins. and then wear them until they dry out.

You will love them after that.

There was another thread about this floating around, but I'm not sure if it's been deleted. If you're looking for dress boots, some fine suggestions have already been made. If you want utility boots, I'm with HatDaddy. I got a pair of Red Wings for Christmas. Third pair I've had. I got the second pair because I grew out of the first pair. I bought the second pair after the TCU game in 1993 and wore them until early this year (half a dozen re-soles and re-heels or so, a few hundred hours in the saddle, hunting trips on three continents including Africa and I finally wore a popcorn-kernel-sized hole near the left pinky toe). Some mink oil for regular maintenance and they'll last for years and years. If my foot hadn't strangely grown another 1/2 inch after I turned 30 and put that hole in the left boot, I might still be wearing them.

And even though I don't wear the old ones anymore, I'll never get rid of them. I'll probably leave instructions for me to be buried in them. Those boots have been to too many places with me and seen the same things I have. No offense to my new pair, but they probably won't go half as many places with me as the other boots did.

I'd also suggest Black Jack if you're looking at exotics.

i've also had a pair of red wing 1178's (hard to find now, but they make 1155's) for 10-11 years and they are extremely comfortable.
