OK, so the wife is becoming increasingly frustrated with her current hair stylist in Austin for being too expensive and inconsistent. Ladies (or interested spouses), who do you recommend in Austin that's not outrageously priced and still does a good job?
Try Blaine at Jose Luis. He does great haircuts ($55--that was a year ago) but I don't love his color technique. I gave him a try because my regular stylist was getting too expensive, but I'm back at my old salon (Dessange) because I like their colorists the best and I don't want to go to two different places.
Try Diane Bennett (451-0099) - I've been going to her for over 14 years now. IIRC, she charges more along the line of $25-$30 for women's haircuts dependent on the length of hair. She's presently working out of the Crestview Barber Shop (this is not your dad's barber shop). She and Pam (the owner) do the complete array of perms, hilights, coloring, etc.
I'm from Dallas and used to go to a fairly expensive stylist in Uptown. I didn't complain because I love him and he did an excellent job. The plan when I moved to Austin this year was to keep him and go back to Dallas for haircuts etc. That didn't work out and I went on the recommendation of 2 friends to a stylist at Bird's on Burnet. I love her even more than my Dallas guy. Her name is Nikki Gardner 512-454-1200
The TGF Hair cutters in Hancock Center-- I35 and 41st basically, has a couple of people who are really good. It's no frills-- I mean you can get the cut and style if you want, but most people go for the spray bottle cheapie cut.
Blair and Tony there are very good. Neither of them look like much-- and Blair's hands smell like smoke, but they both are very good and very consistent. I think the basic hair cut there is 16 bucks. I think you can pay a whole 25 and they will wash and style if for you.
My hair is hard to cut because is curly, but also very very fine. Big body though-- I have had more than a few high-dollar stylist mess it up. Tony and Blair always do just what I want. Don't just pick anyone there though-- every once in a while they get in a new person who's not good.
Oops. Just realized LHF68 is still logged in-- this is Smurfette
I am not sure what is "too expensive", but I just started going to Keith Kristopher on Bee Caves for highlights to Deann and she did a great job. It's about $85 for a partial. So haircuts are probably $55 maybe.
