Recommend a Home Security Service

I was thinking DIY, but this is something I definitely don't want to take the chance of messing up. We live Austin area and we're looking for a good install-and-monitor company.

Before I get started on research, I just wanted to get some opinions from some of you guys to see what your experiences have been like.

I had a Brinks system installed after my house was burglarized. It cost about $750 for installation and $32/mo. It also allowed for a 5% discount on house insurance, which helped.

I haven't had any problems with it--no more burglaries, either.

Absolute Security here in Austin. A Hornfans poster owns the company and another works for them and can arrange somebody to come by. They service ADT. I have zero problems, complaints or issues (with the service or company, that is. I have plenty of issues otherwise, ha.)

Ask for Jim or George

Jim is the owner.

I didn't know we had one on the board. If some reason that doesn't work out (I had issues with ADT and the service people they sent out a couple of times but if you are dealing directly with reputable service people then that is great--wish I'd known about them 2 years ago) I'd recommend Hall Security. They are a local company and the owner is a good guy.

Don't go Absolute Security, trust me. Remember Loop? Can't believe you're recommending these guys again...I was luckily able to get everything resolved with some nasty letters to ADT corporate,

but go direct with ADT or Brinks, DON'T work through a dealer. Yeah, you might get the hardware cheaper but it's not worth it in the long run b/c ADT or Brinks won't work with you if you have issues, you have to go through the "dealer", which from what I've experienced and heard from others is an awful situation.

I'm sure there are some reputable dealers in town but do some research because many of them are no different than encyclopedia salesmen working out of the trunk of their car.

I thought about it ballrific but realized that (yes, I totally remember that debacle) of the people I have also referred in the past, yours was the exception. ballrific totally has reason to still be angry and I back him in his anger in his situation.

If I did not have a few others who did not have any problem at all and since that time frame (with a personnel change in the process) I would not still recommend them. No company is perfect and in ball's situation, some don't even come close. I do still feel confident that this was a glitch on the bigger picture for them based on other experiences.

I still feel bad for ballrific and I still owe him a beer or few if he wants.

yeah, there was definately a personel problem, so maybe a change helped them but talking to some friends who have worked for ADT, they told me the same thing about these "dealers" but I didn't know before but now I do.

You're right though, with my luck they probably shitcanned everyone I dealt with immediately after and now have great people to work with.

i've had ADT for 2 yrs now. the hardware was already in the house, had a couple things added, no complaints. i got a break on my homeowners insurance and i got a discount with my ADT bill b/c i'm with USAA.

We have a security system in the house, but it's not monitored. We still set the alarm, and it will go off w/ a nasty noise if someone tries to come in and can't put in the code.
