Recommend a good shoulder specialist

I think I've got a torn rotator cuff from either weight lifting or boxing. I've been dealing with pain since November and haven't gotten better since February. Any good sport medicine doctors around Austin?

let me know on this one- I have a minor clicking and some pretty severe pain when I do some overhead movments with my left shoulder. Though unfortunately I might have given myself a sports hernia and getting that checked out firat...today...

make the trip to houston and visit Dr. Walter Lowe. It will take a couple of trips, rehab in Austin- thank me in 6-8 weeks.

Frosty Moore re-attached a ruptured biceps tendon for me a few years ago and worked on one of my daughter's sports injuries (broken ankle -twice and ruptured disc). He's good.

But, my current Dr. is John Pearce @ Austin Bone and Joint. He may be the best shoulder Doc in town. I shattered the ball joint in my left shoulder last year in a motorcycle accident and he did the full shoulder replacement surgery. I still have some strength issues, but my range of motion is pretty good.

In fact, the anniversary of my surgery was May 10th. I missed 6 weeks of work and went through 14 weeks of physical therapy.

I got a referral for an ortho from the ER doc (as part of the usual package of info they give you) & wasn't about to go to a generalist for this.

We have good enough insurance that I could go where I wanted without a referral, so I picked him 'cuase I had met him in the past.

Besides, I was also told by the ER doc & Frosty as well that I had a somewhat nasty break; two places 2" apart from each other.

Fair enough on the spacing issue, but I'm in Fam Med and handle all kinds of things like that.

It's pretty routine for the ED to refer straight to ortho. They never try to figure out what your PCP could handle. I only refer out about 15-20% of my fracture care at the most.

You're a family practitioner & yet surgically repair broken clavicles? I'm impressed. Or do you mean you'd handle it w/a sling for 6 weeks?

I'd recommend Greg Westmoreland, MD @ South Austin Ortho. He only does shoulders & knees.

I would go to Richard Hawkins (now in S.C., formerly in Vail) of the Steadman Hawkins Clinic if I had a torn rotator cuff. And I would do it sooner than later (atrophy and fatty infiltration limit choices, from what I understand). The Link

I separated my shoulder in Vail and had Dr. Newt Hasson operate on it. Absolutely terrible experience.

Dr. John Pearce "fixed" the work done by Dr. Hasson and I would recommend seeing him.

I will second Austin Sports Medicine. Dr. Cunningham performed shoulder surgery on my about 4 weeks ago. Repaired and removed some torn cartilage. His PA "Pete" is especially good.

Shoulder surgery is no joke, by the way. You are going to be without your arm (my right one in this case) for at least a month. Then you are looking at 2-3 months rehab.

I have BCBS insurance and the total bill is going to be around $2k - including the hospital, MRI, surgery, etc. Not cheap, but also better than going through life with a busted up wing.

I also recommend Dr. John Pearce of Dr. Kelly Cunningham.

I have seen Dr. Pearce in the past and my mom had shoulder surgery with him and has been going to him for years while Dr. Cunningham did my ankle surgery 5 years ago.

Doctor Walter Lowe in Houston is probably one of the top 5 sports orthopedic surgeons in the country. I had him rebuild my shoulder last year and would do it again in a heartbeat. The shoulder is not an easy joint to work on, and I would not mess around with anyone but the very best if you want to continue to be able to lift and have an active life.
