Hello all. Im looking to buy a point and shoot digital camera and was wandering what recommendations anyone may have. Im looking to stay under $250. I did see a couple of cameras at Sams. There is a Canon 8Megapixel, 10X zoom for $230, and a Kodak 12Megapixels 5X zoom for $180. If you were chosing between Kodak and Canon whihc would most people chose?

I have a Sony Cybershot W80 and love it. It is very quick. It replaced a 5-6 year old Nikon Cool Pix.

What ever you pick look for it to have a view finder too. LCD screens can be very hard to see in bright sun. The price difference for those with a rechargeable battery will quickly be made up by not buying batteries all the time.

Anything over 7mega pixel is overkill. I don't know if any of those listed capture video, but the Casio Exlim does and does a great job of both still and video. I own a Canon vid camera FWIW. You will not be disappointed with the Exlim.

BTW, no doubt that Canon and Sony make a quality product, they also spend a lot on advertising on those magazines/sites.

Wolfman, before buying a Canon, I suggest you google E18 error and read about this design flaw that occurs in many of the Canon models. I purchased a Canon as my first digital compact point and shoot and was very pleased with it until about a month ago when it went dead with the E18 error. My previously excellent camera, for which I paid nearly $400, is now nothing but a paper weight. Despite the fact that this is a wide spread defect, which if occurring in a vehicle would result in a recall, Canon will do nothing about it if the camera is out of warranty. I have not been able to determine if this problem has been corrected in current models, but it does not matter because I have no intention of ever buying another Canon product.

i cannot stress the canon enough. i have the SD750... i really like the capabilities.. my favorite feature is you can choose a color to stand out while the rest of the photo is black and white.

football games are so bad ***.

i have some pretty good pics of field action that my computer deleted. but you got black and white photos with orange pants, orange in the stands etc.... really cool stuff.

MilkmanDan, interesting as mine is (was) an SD550, also, and I was very happy with it. I have no idea what percentage of the Canons have the E18 error problem but it occurs in dozens of Canon models. In all my research on line and talking to camera store sales people I never saw or heard any thing about it, but once you do a search for it you discover lots of forum discussions on the subject and even class action lawsuits.

UTDad, Thanks for posting that. My youngest is wanting a P&S digital so I've started to look for one for her.

We have a Nikon D50, a Fuji prosumer model (can't remember the number) and a Canon Powershot S60. Haven't had a bit of trouble with the Canon, but it rarely is used and did survive a VERY rough trip to RRS a couple of years ago. Good to have the knowledge though. Thanks.

I got the E18 on my canon, I think 550(?) they replaced/repaired fairly quickly. It was still within warranty, I think a year.

I bought the A720IS last night for $200. It was rated as one of the best overall bang for the buck cameras on all of the websites that I was referred to above. So far I lke it. The pics look good on the LCD screen. The menus and functionaliity are pretty intuitive. BTW, GOO those are come cool pics, I cant wait to play with the photo editor.

I still need to buy a memory card for it. They give you a 16MB card with the camera, but it only holds 4 or 5 pics. I hope that I dont run into the dreaded E18 error mentioned above. I found the following website which lists the Canon models that have the problem and my model is not listed: www.e18error.com/ Hopefully it wil not be a problem.

Thanks again to all for all of the advice.

Camera companies piss me off. Nikon had a serious issue with their first DSLR camera. This thing was a lot of money at the time when it first came out and they refused to acknowledge a known problem for a long time. It wasn't until the photog forums started devoting full threads to the issue did they finally acknowledge it. Seems like Canon is doing the same but since these are on consumer models, they aren't caving in yet.
