Real 'MVP' Last Night

Props to Eli Manning for playing a good game last night, but I have to feel like "MVP" is a bit more than he truly deserved.

Everyone in their right mind would acknowledge the Giant's Defense won them the game. Manning simply "managed" the offense (similar to Big Ben when the Steelers won a few years ago). He didn't make any key mistakes (minus the one tipped INT) and came through at the clutch moments.

If it were up to me, I'd rename it the "Most Outstanding Performance" trophy and would hand it to the Defense as a whole, or the D-Line as a group. You can't single one of them out individually, but they played the most crucial part in the win.

They were great but Eli did lead his team about 80 yards against one of the best defenses in the league with less than 3 minutes to go. A good defense should put you in a position to have a shot at winning the game. An MVP goes out and wins it and IMO that is what Eli did.

The Giants defense though was amazing. The pressure the DE's were putting on Brady was easily the reason the Patriots only scored 14 points.

MVP consideration also HAS to go to Tyree. He had one TD catch and then the best catch of possibly the entire year. (Bailing Eli out of a sure INT)

What a catch!!!

Gotta love Texas Fans...

If Vince Young had a 9-14, 152 yd, 2 TD 4th quarter, with the second TD being the game winner with under a minute to go, every Horn fan everywhere would say that Vince is the greatest of All Time and deserving of the Super Bowl MVP.

Eli earned it. The defense certainly set them up with a chance to win, but with the game on the line Eli Manning stepped up and made the plays to win the game. Last time I checked, when Texas played a certain team in a stadium that used to look like a Horseshoe, the defense put Vince Young in a position to win that game. Give Tyree all the credit for the catch, but an equal amount of credit has to be given to Eli for avoiding the sack to begin with.

It's safe to say that the ENTIRE Giants TEAM played one of the most complete games you'll ever see. Nobody made a critical mistake. Mistakes were made, but none were killers. Amazing and fantastic plays were made by several, but everybody contributed something.

As much as I can't stand the Giants, I was rooting for them furiously from about the third play of the game. Their desire and determination were quite irresistable.

And, as it turns out, THEY were the team of destiny, not the Patriots. Even after blowing the opportunity that might have broken the game open for them (when Manning overthrew a wide open Burress after a scramble on 3rd down on the three-and-out possession just before the Pats retook the lead), just when they seemed dead, the Giants came up with the kind of play that, when it happens, makes you simply shake your head in disbelief. That's when you KNOW that one particular team IS going to win because all the stars and planets have lined up for them.

On a side note: Have Tom Brady and Matt Leinart been introduced?

Justin Tuck should have been the MVP. Richard Dent won it for the Bears when their D was so dominating. Tuck had 6 tackles and 2 sacks. Should have gone to him.

Although, Eli did great last night..hard to argue against him winning it.

The Giants rotated a couple of extra d-linemen in there, so the MVP would have to be shared, and the NFL doesn't usually do it that way.
It's OK to give it to Eli, but the defensive line clearly won the game for the Giants. Props should go to the punter (three out of four possessions at one point inside the 12 yard line) and the running game as well, which controlled enough of the clock to keep Brady off the field just enough to win.

i've never seen a better example of how important it is to get a pass rush with your front 4. if only the horns could do the same. let's hope that '08 is the year we finally see it.

for a while there Pierce and Tuck were the best players on the field. just dominating the pats on every snap.

i have been very impressed watching pierce play every time I see him.

The reason the Giants made the Super Bowl and won the Super Bowl is that for the first time in his career Eli Manning played four straight outstanding games (5 if you count New England at the end of the regular season which was huge for this team) To me, the most valuable player should go to the person who is most responsible for the success of his team. The Giants defense was good and the running game was good this season, but until Eli elevated his game they weren't a championship caliber team.

When it came down to it Eli Manning was the most outstanding player when it mattered most (the 4th quarter). If it was Vince he would have been cannonized, Eli deserves the same treatment.

The catch and run by Kevin Boss was pretty important. NY hadn't been doing much with the ball till he pulled it down and took off.

Maybe not MVP but that was a critical play.

Agree to a point, and it's being said on Rome and other shows today.

But, with 2:39 clicks left and 85 yards to go I felt it was a glass hill to climb for a 4th year QB in there and given Eli's less than Brett Farve gritty "demeanor" but the guy stood in there -- and ran like hell out of there on the Big Play, ala Colt McCoy -- and played like a champion who would not be denied.

Why does the offense scoring 3 points over the first 3 quarters not factor into the decision? One of the top 5 offenses in the history of the NFL was held to 14 points in their biggest game.

definitely would have gone with either Tuck or a combination of the DL...

No knock on Eli, I'm not really sure why so many dislike him, but he was not the MVP. Even in the final drive, the only good passes were the last two. Prior to that he threw basically two interceptions that turned out not to be, as well a a desperation heave that easily could have been intercepted except for a phenomenal play by his WR. Absolutely the shakiest successful two-minute drive in playoff history.

At the end of the day, the very luckiest NFL dynasty ever just met up with someone who outlucked them...

I was thinking "Welker" until the Giants pulled it out with that last drive, then I can see Eli getting the award.
