I have a 2000 Nissan Frontier 4X4, V6.
The lifters are rattling at higher RPM's before it changes gears. Any recs on how to get rid of this annoying noise?
What type of oil do you use? I used a slightly thinner oil in an old car and it made the lifter tick go away. but that doesnt really sound like the same thing you have.
I have a Honda/Toyota shop, but we do have the "AllData" factory information system. I looked up factory service bulletins for 2000 Nissan V-6, and there is one about "rattle at cold engine start," NTB04-017.
There is an updated hydraulic lifter, part #13231-V5005, to cure this problem. Changing lifters would be an expensive job, so you would try a couple of other things first. Sometimes sludge builds up in the lifters, and makes them noisy. You could try a good commercial engine flush product, and drain it out and put fresh oil in. You could try one of the motor additives that claim to help problems like this, and might get lucky.
Also, sometimes even if the car is out of warranty, a dealer will fix it under what they call "good will" if there has been a defect discovered, if the car is not too far out of warranty.
You can probably get a copy of the service bulletin somewhere on the net by googling, or at the dealer parts department, or if you want to come by here I will print it out for you.
I've always used Quaker State, but I think that has changed to Pennzoil within the last few years if I am correct.
It has done it from time to time, but seems as though it has been pretty regular within the last few months. I have 92K on the truck and just did the 90k service. I'll try some additives and see if that fixes the problem.
Thanks for the advice.
