The only ranking that will matter is being a national seed and getting to host a regional and super regional. If the path to omaha stays in Austin for two weekends the chances are fantastic we see the Horns in the CWS. right now you have to figure the Horns are either the one or two national seed and likely get the TCU regional paired for the Super regional.
If TCU is a top 8 seed then I don't think we can see them in a Super. They would be hosting themselves against one of the 9-16 seeded regional winners.
OrangeRout, in spite of TCU's ranking I dont see them as a national seed. Their RPI is in the teens and there are several good teams ahead of them in terms of getting that 7th or 8th national seed. They will host a regional but look for the Austin and Fort Worth regionals to in all likelihood be paired in the supers.
RPI has a lot to do with getting a top 8 seed. Overall record, conference affiliation and conference record, record against ranked opponents, etc., all play into the decision. They will announce the 16 regional hosts the day before the full bracket comes out. Then when they announce the full bracket, they will reveal who the top 8 national seeds are.
By the way, I happened to catch on ESPNU the other day that ESPNU will be covering 2 of the 16 regionals, and all 8 of the super regionals will be covered among all the ESPN channels.
The boydsworld.com RPI Needs Report has this to say about TCU:[pre]Team RPI 8 16 32 45 ROWP
Texas Christian 13 ----- ----- 4-4 1-7 0.312
[/pre]So without some help they're looking at a final RPI outside the top 16. Of course note the caveats on the report (such as "very rough guide," the assumptions made, the committee doesn't look only at RPI).
Boyd also has them at #5 ISR, thus giving the committe a perfect setup to hose Augie and his 'Horns: send TCU to Austin for the regional.
I think it would be an unfair draw for Texas to face TCU in the Supers, asuming both teams win to that point, but I'd be okay with it. I love our chances against any and every team in the country in a 3-game series.
It's those crazy 4-team mini-tournaments like the regional and 1st round of the CWS that pose the most danger, because crazy things can happen in those mini-tournaments.
I actually think we're built better for regionals this year because of our pitching. We're not going to have another team in our regional that has even two #1 type starters, let alone 3. If we don't make it out of regionals, it will be because something went horribly, horribly wrong.
