Rangers place Padilla on Waivers

Whoa, that is a surprise. He's always been a headcase, but it's not like we're to a point where we can simply drop our top-line guys. Last night's train wreck aside, he had been pitching well in May (before DL stint).

I'm more upset w/the general tenor of the article, though. I was hoping we'd turned a corner and gotten out of this "rent-a-player" mentality in some misguided notion that we're gonna win it all in a given year. We've been down this road so many times. We've milked our farm system dry of good young pitchers chasing these guys like Adam Eaton, Phil Nevin, Carlos Lee.

Holland and Feliz are not ready. They just aren't. Not for a playoff-contender, as we are trying to lay claim. If the vicious cycle is complete, both will be rushed, the team will be over-anxious at their lack of development and proceed to package them up and ship 'em off, right as they figure it out for someone else to benefit.

Annoying.

It is a surprise, but I kind of like it. Padilla, while dominant in May, doesn't strike me as a team guy who other players will rally around, not to mention the fact that his ERA is 5.57.

I don't think this is a move that will cost us any prospects. It sounds like the Rangers just want to free up some salary room to acquire a big(ger) named player by the trade deadline. The "rent-a-player" mentality is something nearly all teams do who are in playoff contention. And after watching games against the Yankees, Tigers, etc., we need all the help we can get.

Our farm system is right where it needs to be, and I think Daniels is smart enough not to mess with it this time around.

I don't know...yes he is a bit of a headache but it's a gamble. I am not in the locker room so I'll side w/ management on this one for now.

Combine this w/ Hamilton possibly missing 2 months and who knows what is going to happen. Please tell me we don't play the Yankees anymore this season after Thursday!!!! We need Harrison back and pitching well.

Could be worse...got a lead in the West and playing pretty well.

I wonder if his comment that seemed to imply that his infield underperformed when it didn't turn a double play to get him out of the 4th had anything to do with it. Or was it also partly due to his hitting Teixera twice and thus potentially starting that mess again.

Watch the name Ben Sheets. If he recovers from surgery, he could be a Ranger. Just the type of player the Rangers would take a chance on.

I am all for throwing at Douchxiera. I bet all of Padilla's teammates were smiling inside.

Doubt anyone will claim him for $8 million. There should be some trade interest but the Rangers will probably have to pay some of his salary.

Good riddance. The dude is a psycho. Wasn't he accused of murder in Honduras? He always is at or near the top in hit batsmen. I thought we were stupid to re-sign him at all, much less at his ridiculous salary.

I imagine that Washington and Nolan both warned him that any ******** would not be tolerated. Then came Tuesday night. He has shown that he won't change and does not give a ****. Despite his live arm, no team will claim him off waivers. That says everything.

Padilla is an overpaid, immature douchebag who's going to finish the year with a 6.00+ ERA, thankfully not in Arlington. We don't need him around the group we have right now.

Good ******* riddance...

I suppose I am surprised, but I shouldn't be. This guy has been a head case for awhile and the latest outing with the Yankees probably did him in with mgt. I suspect there is more to the story that lead up to this than we know.

The Rangers need stability and someone they can count on as they make run for the West and Padilla is neither stable or reliable as a starter IMO. After the Yankee game he probably became a liability and mgt may have feared eventual undermining of the lockeroom.

It is risky getting rid of him and taking a gamble with a FNG on the mound, but axing Padilla may be less of a gamble than keeping him (and all that goes with it). This is what I think the decision boiled down to.

Nolan Ryan is a no-nonsense kind of guy, and I think he just won't put up with petty ********. IMO, if NR feels like a guy is causing distractions to his team, no matter what kind of talent that guy may have, he's going to be packing his bags before too long.

He is on waivers, so it is not a rumor.

No team will claim him at $8 million a year. The Rangers will then have him back & can do one of three things. They can cut him and eat his salary plus the buyout of next year's contract. They can option him to the minors. Padilla could then refuse the assignment and become and outright free agent. The Rangers would then owe him the 8 million for this year and the buyout for next year minus whatever the new team pays him which is likely to be the league minimum. Finally, they can re-install him in the rotation with the waivers move serving as a veritable "shot across the bow".

I think this was a motivational tactic and nothing more. The Rangers may trade him later, but will almost certainly have to eat part of his salary. Management has a pretty good idea that he will not be claimed and simply wanted to send a message.

I have mixed feelings about whether it will work or not, but there is little doubt that Padilla should be pitching as if his livelihood depends on it. He won't be worth what the option year on his contract is on the open market. He is in essence pitching for his next contract right now and I think the Rangers are trying to remind him of that.
