Rangers on Sunday

Nice win tonight. Very good job by Feldman for seven innings, a shutdown inning by Francisco (fresh off the DL), and a tense, but successful close by C.J. Wilson. Big HRs by Murphy, Young, and Salty. And excellent defense. It's a shame they can't make up any ground on the Angels, who just refuse to lose.

Big road trip coming up - four in Oakland, three in Anaheim, then on to Cleveland. Angels will have to go to Chicago and play the Sox. Maybe the Chisox can cool them off a bit.

I'll leave it to the other Ranger zealots for tomorrow - I'm off on a quick business trip to Bethesda. I should be back in time to see if I can brew some good mojo for Tuesday's game in Oakland.

just looked at the standings, both the Red Sox and the Yankees have 42 losses, so as long as the Rangers stay relatively hot, they will almost certainly catch one of the two teams, for the wild card spot. LA has been so hot for so long, I just don't see them cooling down, and even if they do, the Rangers will probably just fall short of catching the Angels.

I like the idea of getting the wild card, winning a few games this year, then next year winning the division and going further.

just finished watching the game. holy moly. c.j. made it tense but he absolutely busted balls when it got to crunch time. josh/grieve were already racking up a win going into the 9th..."win the homestand, beat the mariners 3 of 4, move to 4 behind the angels, blah, blah, blah." all seattle needed was 2 to tie and got within a hair. luckily c.j. was nails and got the close call at the end, though I think replay showed that jack wilson didn't touch the ball.

forget about the Angels, look at BOTH the Yankees and the Red Sox. Rangers should catch one of these two, maybe both.

I'm ready to make the call - not that someone will hit a HR or that we'll catch the Sawx or the Yanks but that we will sweep the A's. The odds of that, even though Oakland stinks right now, is slim...but I think this team can/should put up 4 in a row. This is not, repeat, is not a Jinx.

Just got back from Bethesda. Saw the results of the heartbreaker in Oakland last night on SportsCenter this morning. Guess we need to brew up a fresh batch of mojo for tonight...

Why is Arias leading off instead of Elvis? If the answer is "because he is playing for the injured leadoff hitter" that may be the worst answer ever.

Honestly, I don't think I have seen a more uncomfortable middle infielder than Arias in a long time. Last night, he dicked around on a couple of plays and almost got beat out. Then he got pantsed when he was playing 2B damn near the warning track and couldn't throw out a decent runner on a routine ground ball.

Tonight, he likely ****** us out of a double play when he ranged over the SS side of 2B, cutting off Andrus who had a good play on the ball, then failing to even be able to get ONE out because he missed the bag at second.

Couple that with the fact that he is literally swinging at every damn ball and he is a train wreck. I get he just got called up, but dude needs to get it together.

Beat by Oakland. Shutout, for crissakes. On a night when the Rangers could have made up a little ground on the Angels.

I'm glad I didn't watch that game. It might have driven me to drink bleach.

Arias definitely strikes me as the kind of guy who is a career Triple-A ballplayer. Good enough to have a little success at that level, but never quite good enough to sustain at the major league level. Why he is leading off baffles me.
I realize Wash wants to keep the pressure off of Elvis by leaving him in the nine hole, but if Omar isn't even gonna lace 'em up, Elvis is easily
our best option. I still contend he is our best option when Ian plays, but I realize I'm in the minority on that one.

Even if we somehow win these last 2 games in Oakland, I consider this a lost series. Short of winning 3 of 4 is a big disappointment, in my opinion.

I have resigned myself to the fact that our offensive problems are not going away. If we don't win with great starting pitching, we won't be winning at all.

OUE, I share the frustration, but we do need to remember that this is a team that's 14 games over .500 and still in a race for the playoffs. I don't think they could win in the playoffs this year, but just getting there would be a great building block for the future. McCarthy and Hurley were lost for the season early, then you can add Matt Harrison. Those guys, along with Holland, Feliz, and Millwood form a pretty decent nucleus for 2010. We need to see Josh regain his hitting form and see Ian get rid of that homerun mentality and the accompanying uppercut swing, and the offense can be there. Maybe not next year, but certainly somewhere in the future Elvis will mature into the leadoff role. I suspect either Chris Davis or Smoak will be ready to be the everyday 1B - I'm assuming that Hank will be gone next year. Otherwise, Murphy, Cruz, Michael Young, Salty, Teagarden, the bullpen - what's not to like?
