Rangers Free Agents

So far, the Rangers appear to be merely dabbling in the Free Agent market. The Link These appear to be very low-risk, low-dollar signings. There were earlier reports that the Rangers might be a player for Ben Sheets as a higher-profile free agent, but so far, no reports of promising movement. Anybody got any later insight?

check out mlbtraderumors.com and click on Ranger rumors to get caught up.

I think they will sign one more cheap RP (maybe eddie g) and make an offer to Sheets. I'm starting to wonder if they aren't hoping someone will swoop in and grab him though. To be fair the economy has effected all teams approach to FA this year, but it seems like if they really wanted Sheets they could have gotten him by now.

And two seconds after I posted this, LSB put up a post on the subject.

2003,
Thanks for the info. I'll admit I hadn't thought of Pat Burrell, but that does sound like a one-year replay of Milton Bradley - and thus might work out very well with almost no risk.
I'd still like to see JD make a serious run at Ben Sheets - the FA market is not robust this year, and the action is not hot and heavy, so we might be able to get him for a reasonable deal.

I hate Turnbow, but hopefully he can magically muster some of the stuff he had in '05 so we can deal him at the deadline for something good, a la Gagne.

As you can see, the Rangers are merely picking up a 2 or 3 one-year contracts each offseason. They are letting any player that has had any success go for the most part outside of Kinsler and Young. In the last couple of offseasons, they will take chances on players that were hurt the previous year or who have had problems or have struggled (i.e. Milton Bradley, Eddie Guardado, etc). this way they can say, hey look, we can raise ticket prices b/c we have signed a couple of players and this is a competitive team....BS...

Look at the players they have allowed to go away in the last couple of years who could be real contributors, though Im not in favor of any of the contracts they got mind you:

Mark DeRosa
Gary Matthews Jr
Milton Bradley
Mark Teixeira (traded for lots of prospects, dumped salary for years to come)
Carlos Lee (traded for him, then let him go)
Matt Stairs
Armando Gallaraga--everyone we got in the Alfonso Soriano trade is now gone

Players lost in bad trades:

Alfonso Soriano
Chirs Young
Adrian Gonzalez (boy these last two still sting really badly)
John Danks
CoCo Cordero (though he probably needed out of here to get his all-star career going)

This year, color me surprised if they go after 2 or more medium to big names. I would not be surprised if they try to fool Rangers fans into thinking we are going to be competitive this year by signing one big name, but no more than that.....They are building for the future...that is until they trade their future away again (see Chris Young, A. Gonzalez, and John Danks)

There have certainly been a lot of guys to succeed after leaving Arlington, but GMJ is not one of them. One of the worst free agent signings of the last five years, mainly because of the ridiculous cash he got. Ever since he got busted for roids after leaving, I've enjoyed watching him fight for backup time in Anaheim.
