Rangers draft Klein HS Pitcher Matt Purke

I was really surprised to see the Rangers take Purke over Shelby Miller. Purke is legit though, it isn't every day you can draft a lefty that can pump it in the mid nineties. Biggest question about him is durability. He has a wicked inverted W and has a frame that will need growing into.

I was hoping Purke would fall to the Cardinals, but I'm happy with Shelby Miller. Cardinals are signing Miller away from A&M, so it's doubly sweet.

Inverted W typically happens when the pitcher elevates his elbow above his shoulder during the delivery. It's one of the reason's pitcher typically end up having shoulder problems.

Mark Prior, Anthony Reyes, AJ Burnett, John Smoltz are notable pitchers who have an inverted W action in their delivery.

It's just me personally, but the inverted W scares me away from pitchers.

isn't an inverted W just a M? Sounds like a good pick (value) and their supp. pick was even better if they are willing to pay.

Correct, my 5-yr old has learned that a W is just an M flipped around.

Having an "M" can put more torque on the elbow (ulnar-collateral ligament) because there is a better chance for a late "whipping" motion to the elbow.

This is in no way a prediction of injury but I think this is what Cardinall Fan is talking about.

I'm a Klein grad so was glad to see Matt stay close to home. He joins fellow Klein grad David Murphy in Arlington. Bearkats representin'!

While I'm sure you're proud that your five year old can understand the difference between a W and an M, the correct terminology for what I'm describing is the inverted W. I didn't coin the term on my own.

Not being snotty, just responding in kind. If they can't take a bit of a ribbing back well, that's a bit aggiesh.

So, grow up a bit Ignatius.
