Weaver v. Wilson

We need a win, badly. Weaver has been pretty awesome against us most of the time. Hope CJ can match him.

^A sweep would be even better (remembering that this is a two-ggame series with the Angels).

stRangers need a serious break in the recent funk we saw in Toronto... CJ Wilson needs to step up and get it done.

Go Rangers!!!

Monday game -- Rangers up 4-0 going to the bot of 4th at Arlington, and Holland looking gret so far. Me liking it! ...

Elvis' play in the 8th...one of the top 10 plays at SS in recent memory. Amazing.

and he makes one of these types of plays often.

Smoak is killing me. One out in the 8th, runner on 3rd in a 1 run game and he takes a HR cut. Pops out for the 2nd out. This kid is a far cry from a major leaguer.

Had a shot at getting a 2 run lead w/ a disciplined AB (Murph ended the inning a moment later). Smoak would have fit well here in 2006-8. Unintelligent, caveman baseball displayed there.

Smoak will be a Ranger for a long, long time. The kid's got an eye for the strike zone and the patience that Chris Davis would kill for. Me likey Smoak.

I was so excited about the Weaver/Wilson duel, I completely skipped Holland's turn in the rotation. Oops.

Bullpen came through tonight. Nippert left two stranded in the 6th, Oliver shut them down in the 7th/8th and Feliz was great in the 9th.

That play by Elvis was

At first, I thought Hunter was safe, but the replay was bang-bang, so I'll take it. It almost made me forget the simple play he botched earlier in the game. LOL.

Smoak is fine. Can't believe anyone would already be bashing on the guy -- after what -- 2 weeks? Hell, he has more walks in 2 weeks than Davis may get in 2 years. He had the right idea (get the ball in the air), but his execution was a little off. Replay showed it was a strike, so it's not like he went fishing for some junk offspeed pitch.

Jut so we're clear, I like Smoak, too. And, I agree that he generally looks much more comfortable at the plate and seems to have a better approach than did Davis.

The foregoing notwithstanding, the AB in question was a very poor one. I imagine that Smoak (like any self-respecting hitter) would agree that he's got to do better than that with runners on the corners and less than two outs.

Smoak's huge hack on the 1-1 count was not consistent with getting the run from third home. Hence my comment about Carl Everett and situational hitting.

PFD, I'm with you. That AB wasn't great situational hitting. I just think the 'caveman' hitter judgment seems a bit overstated, at this point. Everett had about a decade's worth of major league at-bats to make a reasonable conclusion about both his approach and his ability. Smoak has all of 3 weeks worth of experience. He had to swing at the 1-2 pitch, but his decision to swing at the 1-1 pitch was a poor one, for sure.

HHD, I loved Chris as a 1B. That dude can really pick it. But he was the modern-day version of Rob Deer at the plate. I'm glad he's seeing some success at AAA, but he strikes me as the kind of guy who'll always be a fringe major-leaguer. I hope I'm wrong, though, as I'd like to see him succeed, here or somewhere else.

oue,

The Caveman reference fit the description. No other way to put it. There have been other instances of this w/ him.

He has a good eye, swings hard when he thinks he has something to hit. Nothing wrong with that. What IS wrong, is his complete lack of understanding for the situation at hand.

Last nite was a great example. MLB hitters, at least ones with a clue, don't pull that kind of **** off in that situation.

The guy is below the Mendoza Line, and he was brought here for his offensive production. Pretty sad. I hope he succeeds b/c I like what this team is trying to do, but what I see is a Hank Blalock Light. That's the last thing this team needs.

We'll miss Davis' defense in the end- jmho.

I don't want this to be a Smoak thread, so we'll just agree to disagree. For the record, I didn't deny that the at-bat last night was poorly executed, but think it's a little silly to start generalizing about the kid's plate smarts after ONE poor at-bat. He may have been up a couple other times w/men in scoring position, but it hasn't been so much that I remember other specific cases, good or bad. The average may not be there, yet, but even most of his outs have been either hit hard or after working counts. Last night was just a bad at-bat, no doubt.

Weaver v. Wilson tonight. C'mon, C.J! He leads the A.L. in ERA heading into the game tonight.

oue,

Fully understood. I don't log on every time i see him or anyone else blow a chance to push a runner across.... that was just a big brainfart in a key moment. Supposed "producers" can't afford to do that....and my final say on the kid is> his OPS was the 3rd lowest in our lineup last nite. And that was with Vlad sitting on the bench. If we're promised "production" from Smoak, then he needs to deliver. He's not cutting it.

C'mon CJ, get us 8 big ones tonite so Feliz can get a nite off.

pitching expectations obviously went bye bye.

after Frankie retired the side in the Top 8th, the great Mark Holtz would have said, "The Rangers will be going to the 9th at least one run ahead." I LOVED that call.

Neftali in 9th:

96. 99. 99. 96. 83. 97-K
97. 96. 99. 98. 96. 82-K
98. 100. 100. 83. 99. 6-3. 3 outs

Whew! Takes my breath away.

The 'pen was outstanding tonight. And that's important on a night that CJ just didn't have it.

Nails. Just nails.

Winnin' ugly is better than winnin' nothin'. I'll darn sure take it !!

I'm concerned about Neftali pitching too much, but Maddux knows 10000 x plus than me about pitching and his staff.

If I'm an Angels fan I'm concerned about their bullpen. If it's really that bad, they won't be around in Septemeber (something I wouldn't have dreamed of).

Watching the swingin' A's and the Mariners...extra innings. I'm pulling for a bullpen buster 22 inning showdown

Nice win.

The Angels bullpen may be their weak link, but they pitched well tonight. They just didn't pitch quite as well as our bullpen, thankfully.

C.J. threw out a clunker -- his first such outing of the year. Weaver did, too, though.
