Rangers 5/26

Hi, OUE,
I did see the play Elvis made. That was an incredible stop and throw. Was the batter out at first? Even on slo-mo replay, I couldn't tell - and I've done a bit of umpiring before. That umpire had to make the call in real time - and it was a definite bang-bang play.
Isn't the game today a 3:45 CDT start?

The pitching has been for the most part, decent, lately. The defense is much improved. The homer happy lineup needs to do a more consistent job of manufacturing runs , but when they catch fire the team can score 10-15 runs. It's fun to be a Rangers fan, this week.

I've been so impressed w/Salty this year. Even before the grand slam yesterday, I've felt this kid has dedicated himself, which is really refreshing.

His defense is world's better. His offense has been spotty, but more than enough for a hitter at the bottom of the lineup. I think he's really responded to the organization showing full-faith in him by trading Laird.

Padilla was filthy yesterday. Too bad he didn't get the W.

Jim,

I'm taking it that you're an Astros fan who hasn't paid two seconds of attention to what the Rangers are doing outside of the occasional glance at the standings?

As one of the Seattle writers wrote yesterday, these aren't the Matt Kata Rangers.

Hey, I am not an astro fan (been a Ranger fan from 1989 when Palmeiro, Sierra, Franco and Incaviglia thrilled me) .. And I haven't bothered even for 2 seconds to glance at what the Astros were ever doing, but still I agree with what Jim is saying about the Rangers.

I am one of those masochist Ranger fans who keep cursing the organization for exactly what Jim is pointing out, but would keep on wasting my time thinking of the Rangers, getting a high from all these 4 or 5 day periods like now, of raised hopes that we have turned a corner .. Heck I even remember a 16 game win streak back in 1991 or something. We have been turning the corner for 20 years that I have been a fan ... The never-ending corner !! ...

And we contine, with the same old same old team every year, and the same old same old hopes, every year. I have never been able to figure out why I have not been able to just shake the Rangers and just say, to hell with them, and become an Astros or Angels fan. I just can't.

My deep fear is that one of these days the Rangers will actually win a pennant or something, and that I will stop being a fan.

Oh boy, do you all remember what happened when we finally reached the postseason and looked like world beaters on the Yankees for like a game and 6 innings? ... My "faith" in the Rangers was properly cemented back in, during just a couple of innings right there, and what happened in the next couple of games to Juan "as in Gone"zales and party.

Really, if they were any different, I am not sure I would find it interesting to follow the Rangers. The uniqueness of never having had ANY postseason success in so many decades and waiting for ever to "turn the corner" is addicting.

AstroVol,

I must have missed all the years when the Astros won the Fall Classic. Somebody point to all those WS trophies for me -- I'm having trouble seeing them.

Astros have been in business since, what, 1961? And they've won exactly one pennant and have been to the World Series exactly one time more than the Rangers.

And for the record, I would not care at all about who wins the Silver Boot except that those games count in the standings. I wish they'd totally get rid of interleague play, anyway. Baseball doesn't need it.

Why does every Rangers thread feature one or two Astros fans who feel the need to bad mouth the team? Look, the franchise has made questionable decisions in the past and hasn't been successful. I know this. But, it is intriguing to actually see the team put stock in raising their own arms and prospects. We don't have on of the best farms in baseball for no reason. Jon Daniels and Nolan decided to undergo a change and Daniels made some good trades. Sure everyone can point to Chris Young and Adrian Gonzalez and John Danks all they want. I know those ****** trades happened. But, things have looked good lately. Why do people feel the need to **** on this thread? Let us enjoy a four game winning streak because we don't often experience winning.

The Astros are an average pro sports franchise worthy of little glory. They compete for championships from time to time, but are largely just an also ran.

The Rangers are one of the worst pro franchises in sports history. They are masters of failure, and have virtually nothing to show for their storied history. I'm trying to think what the organization's greatest accomplishment is. Maybe that time Nolan Ryan kicked Ventura's ***?

Don't **** on the Astros by comparing them to the miserable Rangers in the same sentence, and I won't **** on your thread. Thanks.

Vol, would you have rather have history or future? Because the Astros' hopes for at least the next 2-3 years sure do suck. No matter how big of a homer you are, you can't realistically say that about the Rangers.

Wow. As I lifelong Rangers fans, I grew up hating the A's and the Yankees. I never did and still don't, give two shits about the Astros. I hate interleague play, not for traditional reasons, but because it forces an unbalanced schedule. Thus, if I had my way, we would not even play the Astros. I mean it is just a non issue all around. Moreover, I have attended games for at least the past 30 years and I know of nobody who considers the Houston series any more important than any other non-division series. Of the Astros fans I know, I detect a similar amount of apathy. Thus, why do some Astro fans on this board always threadshit about the Rangers? Why do you give a ****?

The Rangers have always sucked. This is true. No Ranger fan ever really argues the point. We are basically the bottom of the barrel (along the with the Expos/Nationals). We were a good team for a sustained periof of time only once: the 1990s. We get it, we are historically bad. But I will hear that from legitimate Yankees fans/Sox fans/Cards fans, etc, but not from an organization that has exactly the same number of world championships as ours. Perhaps that is why you talk **** to us, we are the only organization you can talk **** to.

As a long suffering stRangers fan... one of these days, one of thse days they will put it all together.... it will be a glorious time when it happens.

"Maybe the Rangers will be different this year, maybe management has changed its philosophy. "

Actually, you are onto something here. The Rangers, for four consecutive seasons, have maintained the same philosopy. Through team history, they have generally gone in a new strategic direction about every 12-18 months. They would start to buildd from within, then they do pretty well so they trade prospects for veterans to get them over the top. The veterans don't win a pennant, so they decide to build from within again -- except the minors are depleted so they'll suck for a season or two. Fans get exasperated so they try to fill the gap with high-priced free agents. The free agents don't do so well -- so it's time to build from within again.

Nice series versus the White Sox. Took 2/3 and looked good, even in the loss. That makes for a 5-2 road trip. Not too shabby.

I think this makes about 3 times through the rotation where the pitching has been above-average. Harrison and Padilla have been flat-nasty the last couple of starts.

We begin a series at home w/Seattle tomorrow. Maybe we can gain some separation.

18-14.

Scooter with the solid start to take the series opener versus Seattle. Josh comes back and hits a 2-run bomb.

McCarthy looking for a bounce-back start tonight.
