Range Rover Sport

I'm thinking about purchasing a Range Rover Sport, but before I do, I thought I'd get some opinions. Are they really that reliable or do you just pay that much for the name/import? How do they ride after you've put a few miles on them? Thanks!

Did you mean unreliable? Yes, they are that unreliable. Go to JD Powers and see their last place ranking.

I was getting the wife's car serviced and overheard a service manager for this dealership's Range Rover division talking on the phone to on of his buddies, who I could tell was a diesel mechanic from the conversion, say, " Business is good. You know these Range Rovers just keep breaking again and again like the Ford 6.0s used to." Knowing the history of the Ford 6.0 diesel engine that is a very bad thing to be compared to.

Does your driveway look like this?

If not, you probably don't need it.

I've had a Range Rover for 11 years. Got it back in college. The damn thing is still running at 17 years old and 165k+. It's a daily driver now and rarely stops running.

The fuel pump went at age 15 which stranded me at work. The second time it was the dumbass mechanic at the dealer who nicked a wire that caused occasional, but complete, electrical failure. That took about 4 trips to diagnose. Drove it all the way to NY and back. Then out to CA and back.

Don't get me wrong, I've spent a lot to repair it but it's not because it broke down. I've had the AC go out, fuel tank replaced, power steering pump replaced, $1500 worth of oil leaks, etc. My mechanic says "if it ain't leaking it's out of oil". I have no idea if the reliability got better when they were bought by ford, or for that matter tata motors now.

If you get a Range Rover you have to sing Guns N Roses acappella with your family on road trips.

"You dont even look good while you are singing... Alright, I'm gonna save it with the solo."

They are typically unreliable...right there with Mercedes and Kia among the most unreliable. Part of the reason used to be that a lot of the parts were "hand" manufactured instead of machined (a lot of imprecise fits). Don't know if that's still the case.

That being said, it really depends on who's doing the driving. If you have the proper maintenance performed and don't drive all the oil out of it like a certain nameless person I know, then you can go a long time without any major repairs.

My girlfriend really wants one but there's no getting around the bad reviews. They're everywhere.
