random handyman repairs

I am having a hard time finding an established "handyman" type person. I had one guy but he would take weeks to return calls- not ideal when you have a leak or something like that. I have used Fox's service co a couple of times but they seem expensive- $200 to install a ceiling fan? But our home warranty company charges $200 flat fee for any service call. My problem currently is that the disposal is leaking. That can't be that big of a deal, so I don't want to pay the $200 for the warranty (even though it's covered). Anybody know a good handyman that is actually readily available?? Any input on Fox's? Maybe they're reasonably priced and I'm just not used to it since I'm a first time homeowner.

your home owner's warranty charges 200 per service call? is that even worth whatever you pay yearly?

I suggest one of these.

The only kind of "handyman" you're going to get for less than $200 bucks is some dude with a tool box that needs beer and cigarette money for the next few days. Sure you want that cat in your home?

I called the home warranty co and they said the service call is $60. I am not sure why it says $200 on their website (where you are supposed to go to place a service request)... I guess to deter you from making claims? Anyway, I did that for the disposal but am still at a loss for finding people for things that aren't under the warranty. If $200 isn't that expensive, I guess I'll stick with Fox's for that stuff.

My advice: spend a lot of time doing stuff in your yard on the weekends, and pay attention to your neighbors. If you see someone doing a lot of things in their garage, and they seem to have more money in tools than you spent on your first car, make friends. Odds are, they know enough to help you take care of the small stuff, or they have a buddy that does.

Aks around. There are people who work for habitat for humanity and stuff who do side work like that just to make some extra $$. Maybe try Craig's list?
