So, a few things came to mind...

1. The Feria de Mataderos... is it worth it? We've never been but have heard it's worth checking out. Yes, we've been to the one in San Telmo and Recoleta - I'm sure we'll go back to those again, though.

2. What's the best way to get to Tigre and is it "walkable" enough to go with a 7 month old baby. I've heard it's somewhat of a floating city so I wasn't sure if it is suitable for a stroller.

3. For those of you who have been to a baby in BsAs, how do you get around? Obviously, by foot is one option... but let's say we're staying in Palermo Viejo and want to go down to Recoleta. I suppose we could take the subte but what other options are there? If we take a remise, I'd rather not have to bring a car seat 'cause once you get there, well, what do you do? Given that drivers in BsAs are a bit crazy, I'm sure there aren't many safe options other than lugging a car seat. What the heck do you do?

...oh yeah, and I'm assuming I can find markets in Palermo Viejo that have plenty of diapers and all the other assorted baby crap we'll need.

There is a grocery store near Santa Fe (near Plaza Italia) in the Palermo Viejo area. Plus I think that there are some smaller places closer to Plaza Serrano. (Ask around.)TIGRE-

When I went I took a train from the Retiro Train Station. The train made about 8-15 stops and took about 1 hour. (roundtrip ticket = Ar$5... or about US$1.65)

See if you can take a train from that station at the corner of Santa Fe & Justo. I've never taken a train from there, but it will be easy to get to. Otherwise, you will want to take a cab over to a train station in the Belgrano/Nunez area. The cab could cost in excess of US$4.00, but probably not.

Tigre Itself-

-It's NOT a "floating city". It is mainly two large chunks separated by a river. (Easily crossed by a bridge.)
-There are river boats that you can take that go up river.
-Two or three rivers come together at Tigre and the water takes several different paths. So there are several tiny islands that are only reachable by boat (you won't visit most of these) and the water is a muddy orangish-red.

HIGHLIGHTS-

-There is a Naval Museum
there that requires about a half mile walk. Lots of old battleship replicas from the 1700s-1900s (it is like a replica museum from that Russell Crowe movie a few years ago).
-There are boat cruises
-There is the Feria de Fruitas
that doesn't sell any fruit, but has some more elaborate things than your average Feria in BsAs.

CARTING THE BABY AROUND-

-The cab drivers aren't "That Crazy". You can have them go slow. (They usually prefer this because they stop at more lights and thus you get charged more.)
-Most of the streets are ONE WAY and the people ALWAYS stop for Red Lights. A cautious cab driver should be fairly safe. I only have taken a Remiss to and From the airport. Cabs are everywhere and don't usually screw you on fares. Even if they do, you're getting screwed out of US$3 at most.

If you have one of those hard plastic carrying things for the kid, that should be safe enough in the cab. I guess.

I'm still not down there...

Nap - thanks for the insight. Someone also mentioned there are some markets on Scalabrini Ortiz which is 2-3 blocks from our hotel - perfect location. Taxis probably aren't so bad... you're right. The buses are the ones that scare the crap out of me.

Hookem,

The taxis are used to taking adults around with their kiddos, you do not need a child seat as per law in a taxi or hired car.
I can send you the name of the car service we use while there if you like, they had a couple cars in their fleet that kept child seats in the trunk and would send those when requested. They are all E class Benz's.

Yeah - I could see us occasionally using a service like that. Definitely send me their info. How do they compare to a remise, cost-wise? The convenience sounds bad ***!

Oh, not the markets like the ones in Plaza Cortazar... more like supermarkets (although they're probably not super, just markets).

I remember taxis and remises both being awfully cheap - I don't think we ever spent more than $5 USD for a trip - maybe the most expensive was on our first trip to BA, a taxi ride from the microcentro to caminito. I just figure a more upscale service is going ot have a different price scale.

BTW - other than the Feria de Mataderos, I'm thinking of checking out San Isidro. I know they have a Sunday market and it's supposed to be an awfully nice area.
