I know this is a complicated issue and that the unions tentatively agreed to it in Sept. I know part of the deal included a 25% pay increase and $5,000 in bonuses over a 5 yr contract.
The sticking points among the rank and file seems to be things like apparently they can't use their "sick days" for medical appointments. Seems contradictory and odd to me that the union would have agreed to that? Most nonunion companies allow that.
And another point is that employees are "on call" for a longer time than they want.
NO doubt the pandemic taxed many industries but before 2021 were railroad workers on extended "on calls" a lot?
The "average " railroad worker now makes 65k.
This will have a devastating effect on the country. If the contract goes through as it is everyone costs of products will go up by at least 20% more on top of current inflation.
But wanting a better life seems reasonable.
I think we have some railroad people among HFs
I would like to get better info on what is going on.
