Raiders of the Lost Ark Question

When Indiana Jones gets on top of the submarine after the Nazis take back the Ark, how does he survive the trip through the ocean? Did he get inside the submarine somehow, or did the submarine never submerge? I'm watching a cable tv version, so maybe they cut out a scene that explains it?

In those days almost all submarines ran on Diesel engines on the surface. They only ever switched to batteries and ran submerged when they went to attack. So I would guess logically it never had to submerge. Then again he is Indiana Jones so most likely he just breathed the ocean water, he read how to in a book once.

In searching for an answer to this question, I found out that Indy survived by lashing himself to the periscope (the sub only dropped to periscope depth), but they cut the scene:

Yes, that's quite interesting. But a more important question is: Did a fly really crawl into Belloq's mouth during the canyon scene?

Raiders of the Lost Ark is a perfect movie. Any fault you find is actually a fault within yourself, by definition, since Raiders is perfect.

There's your answer.

Good point LHLawyer. I forgot that when those subs ran on the surface they always had a watch crew for other ships or aircraft.

that island was only 100 yards from those ships so Indy held his breath for the 30 seconds trip

Snorkel's were put on pretty late in the war if I remember correctly. And I don't know for sure, but I always assumed they would be extremely hot to the touch

well, in the movie they show the map with the moving line, and it looked like a pretty long journey to the island. The link above with the comic book page has the clip from the movie
