Radio Performances and Interviews

I have a feeling that I'm on my own on this one, but I have grown to generally hate it when a music radio show I like hosts an in-studio interview performance of an act. I don't much like the fawning of the host nor do I much care about the thoughts of the performers.

Further, one of the things I most like about radio is variety. With a group in studio, adios variety. There are a few exceptions to this. I enjoyed hearing School of Seven Bells do some of their songs acoustically, but I'd trade that not to have to listen to boring conversations.

I'm feeling better now. I sometimes think that the in-studio events are more for the host than the audience. The host gets to hobnob with performers and feel like he/she is part of the scene.

Okay. Thanks for indulging me. My guess is that studio interviews to me are something like having this post read over the radio waves would be to you. Brutal.

I listen to Stern quite a bit, and he has some terrific live performances on his show.

My favorite is Train, who almost always bust out a couple of Zepplin gems in addition to one or two of their own.

Last month he had Billy Joel and a piano in the studio just riffing around for over an hour.

It falls upon the quality of the interviewer. A great interview between songs or sets, makes all the difference. The best I've come across is Ron Bennington of the "Ron & Fez Show." Typically informative and insightful, I find his interviews are the high points of the show, regardless of act or song list.
