Race Based Academic goals

"The Florida State Board of Education passed a plan that sets goals for students in math and reading based upon their race.

On Tuesday, the board passed a revised strategic plan that says that by 2018, it wants 90 percent of Asian students, 88 percent of white students, 81 percent of Hispanics and 74 percent of black students to be reading at or above grade level. For math, the goals are 92 percent of Asian kids to be proficient, whites at 86 percent, Hispanics at 80 percent and blacks at 74 percent. It also measures by other groupings, such as poverty and disabilities, reported the Palm Beach Post."

IMO the Blacks should be the most outraged of all.

What's comical about this is that the affirmative action bake sales are racist, but this isn't.

There's lots of comical things about it.

I think the most comical thing is that anyone actually believes that goal-setting by the "system" makes one bit of difference in the process of teaching and learning. As though if we had simply set goals in previous years, then all of our kids would be ready to function in the world. What a farce.

What goal-setting by the system actually results in is the manipulation of the assessment device by teachers, administrators, and those in charge of scoring the assessment. The results may indicate many things, but it will not produce the sort of meaningful data about teaching and learning that the establishment wants you to believe it does.

There is no appreciation by the establishment of what the system can actually accomplish, and of what should be left for actual human beings to accomplish. To me, the entire educational establishment (and a large portion of the public, too) is invested in hopeless sentimentalities that simply are not grounded in anything like reality.

We're trying to make a science out of human beings, and we're going to waste at least two generations of our kids figuring out that it doesn't work.

Wow, that's just stupid. They're institutionalizing racial stereotypes, just like UT does.

It's sad. Reminds me of the 3/5s law. It's dehumanizing. If I was a minority I'd be insulted and pissed off.

Incentives to get married and stay married? What is so great about marriage? It looks pretty pathetic to me in most instances.

How about incentives to put off having kids or limiting the number of them to ones you can afford?

I would favor giving six kegs of iced down beer and a thousand dollars to everybody between 15 and 30 who would get themselves fixed. Throw in a few tatoos as well.

^^^^^ Whatever works without being racist to get minorities to perform at the level necessary to compete for jobs and to end the cycle of government dependence.

I think there can be some linkage between race and intellectual capacities. An unusually large percentage of Jews display genius in law and comedy, for example. But the standard here is academic mastery and the problem is not intellectual capacity for basic academic understanding, which 98 percent of people of any race have capacity to achieve. What the Florida standards show is that schools where certain cultures predominate are harder to bring around. We can "punish" school for having kids that are harder to teach or we can give them tools to succeed where failure is tradition. But if we're going to judge school on how well students perform on standardized tests -- a really imperfect way to judge schools by the way -- we have to give them achievable goals or everyone loses motivation and stops caring.

It is amazing that some racial minorities are content with being insulted and disrespected as long as they get something out of it.

I may be jaded, but this has union written all over it. Everyone knows that the general public is fed up with poor results in our schools and there needs to be SOME kind of acountability. Enter the unions. Design a "standard" that makes it easier to show progress. Essentially, this says that 26 percent of black kids can faile miserably in school with no repercussions

I overheard a principal once being criticized for his "struggling" school that had made some dramatic improvements in discipline and performance. He didn't want to be quoted on it, but referring to the criticizing teacher in a terrific suburban school he said " you could replace her with a head of cabbage on a stool and every one of the kids would still pass the TAKS."

^^^^^

That is because success in school is more tightly correlated with the quality of home life than it is the quality of the teacher.

The best part is that they have until 2018 to get the black kids to the 74% mark. This is so stupid that I won't even begin to discuss it. However, I will say that I teach some pretty smart black kids every year that walk through the door having never been read to, talked to, or worked with in any fashion. You would not believe how far behind a kid can be at four years old. The average vocabulary of a poor three year old is HALF of what a middle class peer would have. The home life of some of these kids is really shocking. You can fix the numbers however you want but priorities in black homes have to change.

When any government agency sets a "goal" of 74% then eventually that will become the acceptable standard. Any normal person would set goals then raise the bar once achieved, but that has hardly been the case for anything related to our public sector.

I should be angry about this, but I guess I'm not smart enough.

Any parent worth a damn, should be angry about this. But, that's 3/4's of the problem.

How is telling me, I only have to be 74% as good, a tool for success? As a minority, most of these kids are already starting out in a hole. Now you are telling them, they don't even have to climb out.

I'm guessing they are using these to determine school ratings. We could set the bar at 100%, but it wouldnt do much to seperate the passing school from the failing ones. They would all be failing.

uninformed,
you are so right. the home and family set the priorities and standards for a child. Better teachers help, but american schools are just not that hard. If every kid went home and read/studied at night instead of xbox and american idol. They would all get As and Bs.

Unfortunately we don't have many leaders that are willing to tell parents that their childs achievement in school is partly their fault or their triumph.
