R.I.P. Bob Dole

Hideo Gump Jr.

Summer Soldier and Sunshine Patriot
Whatever you thought of his politics, you had to admire his service to his country. All 79 years of it.

I detested Dole being the Republican nominee - not because I didn't like him but because I knew his nomination meant the GOP was throwing in the towel. There was no way a guy who stumbled over his words and referred to himself in the third person was going to beat the master of Slickness.

However, you can't help but admire and appreciate his service. The guy literally had his body busted apart for his country. His injuries were absolutely horrific and would have killed a lesser man. Even if that had never happened, his Bronze Star for valor alone would have made him a serious war hero. Then he spent 35 years as a first-rate statesman on Capitol Hill - a strong conservative but a problem-solver who prioritized getting things done when possible.

And I'm rarely touched or moved by anything a politician does anymore, because I know they're largely a bunch of phonies reading scripts. However, I must admit that his salute for George H.W. Bush's casket was very moving and looked sincere, and I haven't seen anything like that in a very long time.

Indeed - brought tears to my eyes.

Another member of the Greatest Generation lost - if you still have one near spend as much time as you can with them.

Yep. It was a generation of people who loved their country and their way of life and would fight for it with everything they had. Furthermore, they had unshakable confidence. They could overcome anything. We were lucky to have them as long as we did, and we should emulate them as much as possible.

Adam Schiff and Ted Lieu personifies my archetype of hero. We must have courage to face hate.

Bob Dole. A great man. I like when those in the spotlight can have some level of self deprecating nature to them. He was just a sincere guy.

But I'll bet when you had a chance to vote for him, you voted for Clinton, who was basically the Barry Switzer of presidents. lol

I may have voted for Gore. I honestly only remember being comforted in the voting booth that my vote didn't count as Bush was going to win OK despite my vote. I think I voted for Gore. My Republican dad donated to Gore sometime before his death in 1994 so we got Gore Christmas cards for some time. I remember his daughters' were hotties. :)

True story: I NEVER voted for Clinton.

Just not slimy enough for you . . .

I understand. Without him, you wouldn't have any of that internet porn. You owe that all to him.

Sorry, you've got me on a roll here. lol

Gore became a bit of a partisan hack in his old age and as he went national, because that's what "sold," but as a member of Congress, he was very different. On social issues, he was to the Right of many Republicans and was (like Dole) a bit of a consensus-builder and a bipartisan tech advocate. People gave him a lot of **** about the "inventing the internet" remark for obvious reasons. However, he was an important early advocate and leader for it on Capitol Hill. If he had been the nominee in 1988, many Republicans would have voted for him. It's not a big shock that your dad gave him some money.

I remember his daughters' were hotties.

Hell yes, they were. lol When she was young, his wife was too.

The Republican party has long had the bad practice of picking as their presidential nominee the guy who finished 2nd in the last contested primary race.

Sometimes it works out (Regan 76, then 80, Bush 80 then 88), more often it doesn't (Dole 88, 96, McCain 00, 08, Romney 08, 12). Can't quite remember who else ran in 96 - I don't think there were a lot from the GOP side. Picking Mr. Tax Cuts as his VP (Jack Kemp) didn't move the needle any either.
