Love 'em or hate 'em, they are one of the greatest bands of my generation.
They are scheduled to play SXSW this March.

EDIT: Show is confirmed for March 12 at Stubbs.

Radio Free Austin, baby!!!!

I feel stupid asking this, but...
Can just anyone obtain tickets to SXSW?
Obviously I've never been, so I was wondering.
Love REM, seen them several times and would like to go to this.

You can either buy a wristband or a badge. The badge gets you in to whatever show you want, but it's extremely expensive.

Most of the bands play non-SXSW shows during the day, and alot of time it's free and there's free beer. The smartest thing to do is find the free shows during the day.

This would've excited me 10 to 15 years ago. Their old stuff is still good but I don't listen to it anymore.

Here is some random info that might help you meet Michael Stipe and at worst you'll see an interesting show. It's probably a long shot so take it for what it's worth:

I met Michael Stipe many years ago at a Diamond Smugglers (Neil Diamond cover band) show at The Hole in the Wall. I think he is a fan of theirs so if they're playing during SXSW it might be worth stopping by to see if he shows up. He was a bit incognito when I met him so keep your eyes peeled

If you see somebody that if you blink you will miss them, it is likely him!

I wonder if they will get them to play the free stage one of the nights?

I loved 'em!... in the '80s.

Basically there have been about 3 songs since 1990 that I have liked and the lead singer has turned into a TOTAL FREAK!

But back in the mid-'80s, they were the best American band in the world.

count me in as Mr. Snobby Pants. Save for "nightswimming" they have done anything interesting since Document.

The Bronco Bowl was in Dallas, but on Ft. Worth Avenue. (or blvd or street...)

I "second" that Document was their last hurrah! Although they peaked with Life's Rich Pageant.

Saw them at the State Fair Bandshell and at Moody Coliseum. (Bandshell was much
better.)

Has SXSW been relevant to the average music fan in the last 10 years. When I first started going to shows in 1995, it was fairly reasonable to get into a show if you showed up early. In 1997, you had to buy a wristband to get into any decent show. Even still, I watched the badge holders get in the que ahead of me to watch Cibo Matto while I waited impatiently in front of La Zona Rosa. The last time I went in 2003 (the first year the started selling badges), the wristband was almost entirely ******* worthless. All the good shows were filled up with badge holders and the shows I could get into were filled with people that just paid admission to the club. IMO, SXSW is great for the city of Austin in terms of revenue, but has no value for the average music fan.

I got into every show i wanted to see except for sharon jones and the dap kings last year. altogether, I probably saw 35-40 bands (some of them were free shows), but ultimately, it was not a problem getting into any shows. and if you couldn't get into a show, there were a million other ones within 100 feet.

if you're planning on seeing only the most well known bands, then you might have a problem, but just about every band i saw, I'd heard of and intended to see them. in fact, I'd say I enjoyed the music i saw at SXSW more than Bonnaroo and ACL Fest. your experience may be different, but it can definitely be done.

Did you have a wristband to get into all those shows, or did you just show up early? I went to a bunch of day shows and had a blast last year, but was unable to get a wristband living in houston.
