Quote regarding 'measuring a person's character'

It goes something along the lines of: "Character is measured not during times of ease but in times of trouble".

I butchered it but hopefully you get the gist. I think someone has it as their sig. It may be a DKR quote?? I'm trying to find it to include in a card for a friend who is really ill and just out of critical care. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Is this is?

That's close, but not exactly what I had in mind. Thank you, though. It's a great quote and is fitting so maybe I'll use it if nobody else knows the one I'm thinking of...

It is with trifles, and when he is off guard, that a man best reveals his character.
— Arthur Schopenhauer, German philosopher (1788-1860)

Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved.
— Helen Keller

Surely you can find something here

My favorite:

You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.
— Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

well i guess we can infer that the current crop of "the sky is falling crowd" have shoiwn very little character.

Lou Mannheim: Man looks in the abyss, there's nothing staring back at him. At that moment, man finds his character. And that is what keeps him out of the abyss.
