I have a couple of days off in january that I want to use to hop the pond. I'm heavily leaning towards doing rome for 5 days. my dad has expressed interest in tagging along if I go to the italian capital. I'm perfectly fine with this decision, however, I'm wondering if there are other european cities worth considering in january.

what you got?

I agree that Italy is probably your best choice. The further south on the peninsula, it should get warmer.

Spain is also a place where some Euros go to escape the cold, but there is just so much history and sites and food and everything in Italy, that 5 days are easier spent there when seeing something new.

Rome's a walking city, so hopefully your dad can keep up. Take comfortable shoes for walking. And lots of memory cards for your camera(s).

my dad can keep up, and rome being a walking city is a huge draw. I like walking.

spain is out of the question as I just visited.

I think Rome is a good choice. If you will actually be there five days (no including the day you arrive and the day you leave) I would also think about one day trip to somewhere else. If you are looking for some place warm, have not been there before, and have been to some of the other highlights in Europe, Rome is a good bet.

Me, I will be heading back to Paris for the 8th or 9th time on vacation in February. Regardless of the time of year, France is always calling my name.

I have been to rome, but not since I was a child.

going to revisit the obvious tourist stops (il colosseo, la santa sede, piazza di spagna, etc.) the first couple of days and then spend the rest of my stay wandering around hitting up random ristorantes and trattorias.

I will be there a total of 7 days, technically 5 if you subtract day of arrival and departure.

the day trip idea is fantastic. opinions on florence or pompeii?

Rome is definitely a cool city and as you said, very walking friendly. Unfortunately part of that is because the subway is almost totally useless because it's so limited.

If you like skiing, you cant beat the Alps (French, German, Austrian, or Swiss). Easy to fly into Zurich, Munich, or Geneva and drive to whatever resort city peaks your interest.

Florence and Pompeii are both fantastic. Rome is nice, but not my first choice. Sicily is fantastic and you can see quite a bit of it in 5 days with your own car (the roads are great). Taormina is fantastic, Mt Etna is amazing and there are a lot of cool places to stop around the island itself.
