Question re MP3 players

I travel quite a bit and am thinking of getting an mp3 player soon. I'm not looking for something to store my entire cd collection but rather something to listen to the plane. I'd also be able to use it while working out/running.

Right now the leading canidates are the iPod Mini (4gb and about $250), the Rio Nitrius (1.5 gb and about $150), the new Rio Carbon (5gb and about $225) and the Rio Cali (256 mb and about $150).

The reason the Cali is in there is that I'm really worried about the whole rechargable battery issue. The last think I want to have to do is remember to bring a battery charger with me on my trips and there's nothing worse than having the battery crap out on you. The Cali uses a AAA battery which I can easily keep a few extras of just in case at the bottom of my brief case.

I guess my question is how do the other ones recharge? Is it a separate plug than the one that hooks it up to your computer? Is is big like a camera charger or smallish like a cell phone charger?

Thanks in advance.

careful on the ipod. they only play mac .asx files. not mp3.
a good one is the dell jukebox. batteries would not last as long as rechargeable but the chargers are just like cell phones.

oh they made pc versions but my roommates doesn't play mp3 only itunes music. unless they came out with a new model. i know the ipod is the industry standard adn the ipod is blowing away the competition. just make sure it is compatible. asx files are different from mp3.

do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus. do not buy the nitrus.

Ichaboderic, as far as I can tell you don't understand what you are talking about. Are you saying that the music you download from itunes is not in .mp3 format? iPods can play any and all of the file formats that have been discussed.

scott i am a disc jockey. i use pcdj red on my dell. in the past i pods only played .asx files. maybe now they play mp3 if you use itunes for pc but as i have always known, ipods are only mac compatible. itunes for a mac used to not play mp3s downloaded off of itunes music store. i dont follow macs but maybe they have changed. i do know (because i tried it) that if you hook the first series of ipods on a pc you cannot download windows mp3 files to it. but like i said maybe that changed with the newer ones. check the file extensions on mac songs.

The 3rd and 4th generation ipods will play mp3s and several other fomats, including apples aac. The only format that I'm aware of that doesn't work (common formats anyway), is the secure wma. My ipod plays all my old mp3s just fine.

Also, I couldn't be happier with my ipod. Cool as ****.

ipods play mp3s.

i would suggest not wasting money on a iPod mini at $250, when you can get 2X the capacity with the regular iPod for $50 more.

I have an iPod and really like it. I don't think I would like to be stuck on a plane with only 256mb of music.

iTunes is surprisingly cool too - if you're about to run out the door on a trip, it's nice to download a couple of new albums for $10 and have new stuff for the road.

thats what it is aac not asx my bad. i may get one if they are fully pc compatible (mp3 and software). i want one that has an fm transmitter in it so you can play it in your car without those tape deck attatchments.

alright, now I understand what you are saying. Before itunes for windows, the issues you are talking about make sense (although itunes for windows has been out quite a while now). There is still the issue that your ipod will be formatted for a Mac or a PC, but it will not be compatible for connections with both. iPods play virtually every format of sound files out there, and if demand for new types of files come out, I would guess they will adjust. In short, the only compatibility problem would be if you wanted to get songs off of a Mac and your iPod is formatted for a PC or vice versa. There are workarounds but none that I know to be reliable.

do ipods have fm transmitters? you know where you set the station in your car to 88.7 or something. once or if they do i am sold. had no idea they were so pc friendly.

All ipods are pc formatted now. The macs read them just fine. the ipods play aac and mp3 files. Most of the competitors play mp3 and wma. Asx isn't even a binary file, it is a text file used by windows media player to describe an a/v stream. if you buy music online and it comes in wma format, it won't play on the ipod -- that's the only compatibility issue you would have. Conversely, if you buy music from itunes, you could only play it on your ipod until you burned it to cd and ripped it to mp3.

I bought the one Nike makes in conjunction with Phillips. 128MB. got it on E-bay new for about $60. I use it in the gym and love it. Had one for about a year, got stoeln and bought another. I haven't tried to fir more than 20 songs on it, but it still had space left over once I did that. Defintely worth the $60 I paid for it.

HH93 I have to Rio Cali and it is great. I bought for similar reasons to you, I wanted something I could jog with as I run everyday and also something I could use on trips. the 256 mb version holds 4 hours of music (8 hours in WMA format though I don't know how to do that). However you can exand it with up to a 512 mb memory card trippling its capacity to 12/24 hours of music. I bought it primarily for when I run and it works great for that particular purpose. It weighs like and ounce and you can barely even notice that you have it on. If you want an mp3 player specifically for working out this is better than those other players which are large and may not even have an armband.

what is the word on the dell digital jukebox, i'd like to buy one of those. also, i've heard that it is a very bad idea to run with ANYTHING with a harddrive--makes them crap out faster...true?

Dont get the dell. I thought it was a good deal, but it sucks ***. Ended up having to carry a paper clip with it to constantly reset the damn thing. Much happier with the ipod mini, plus it has many more sound options. Also it has the arm band accessory for exercising.
