Question for Gun Nuts

I have a 1916 Enfield in .303 Brit. Absolutely great gun- weighs more than I do, but could probably be used to reinforce a bridge. Anyhow, the safety is very odd. A metal band extends around the stock from the rear of the receiver, to which the safety mechanism is attached.

The odd structure near the cocking indicator/ rear of the reciever is the safety (this is on the side opposite the bolt handle, or the top picture). The lever that extends up can be moved forward of backward, forward being the firing position. A metal retaining plate is fastened to the exterior of the lever and to the metal stock band by two screws.
On my gun, one of these screws is badly damaged. It is a flat head screw, but half of the head is gone. I am afraid to mess with it, since I don't want to lose the screw inside the hole. A competent gunsmith told me that it is not standard, metric, or Whitworth. The gun is Australian, and I am at my wits end. Any help is appreciated.
