Question for a pharmacist

I have had acid reflux for several years. Most of the time, Prilosec OTC once a day works pretty well, unless I decide to eat something prepared with Cajun spices or Harley's Dry Rub, all of which I try to avoid, or if I eat too many scrambled eggs. (I don't know why scrambled eggs affect me so.)

There have been times, however, when my reflux has been so had that I've had to take Prilosec twice a day to get adequate.

Prevacid is now available OTC. If I were to switch, could I expect different (better) results than with Prilosec? What is the difference in the two medications?

Thanks for any help!

from mrs. hornshouse, rph ... you probably won't get a different result switching to prevacid as they are in the same exact drug class. Taking otc prilosec indefinitely without getting checked out by a GI Dr is not the best idea, since a number of ulcers are caused by bacteria which can be cured by antibiotics.

I've been checked out by a doctor multiple times -- and I've had two endoscopies, so I know I don't have ulcers or Barrett's esophagus. I've tried other remedies, including Aciphex (not worth the bottle it's sold in. It gave me no relief whatsoever.)

I just wondered if Prevacid would work better, and now I know it won't.
