Question About the Harry Potter Books

I have seen all of the movies and must confess that I really enjoyed them. I have not read any of the books. If any of you have read the books, please let me know if I would enjoy the books as an adult reading them or are they written on a kids level? I really enjoy reading fanasty novels.

The first book is very childish, but the books grow up as the characters do. Chamber of Secrets gets a little grittier but it really starts to grow and get enjoyable with the Prisoner of Azkaban.

If you can get through the first book, (it'll go by quick) then I think you'll REALLY enjoy the series.

Go for it!

I was in the same boat as you. Saw the movies with my kids but never read the books. My kids, OTOH, have read them all numerous times. Starting in January, I began reading book 1 (Sourcer's Stone) and finished book 7 (Deathly Hallows) in March. This summer I am going through them all once more.

Agreed, the first is written more on a kids level, but it is enjoyable and a fairly quick read. When you get to the last couple of chapters in book 7, be sure you have at least an hour or two to read as you will not be able to put the book down.

The second time around it is nice to read them looking for the clues that you now know are there. If you liked the movies, you will like the books. Rowling does a good job of making the unexplainable seem plausible in the magic world.

I read the first one for a Children's Lit class and eventually read it to the kiddo. I also read the second book to him before he started reading them on his own. I read 3,4,5 on my own and enjoyed them

The only problem I had was that the movies were EXACTLY like the books. I could not find any difference between them.

As a school librarian, I read the first book (with some reluctance) so I would know what the kids were talking about. I generally don't enjoy this genre, but I really enjoyed it and went on to read all of them. They are well-written and keep your attention.

after nagging for about a year and a half, I gave in to my fiancee and started reading the books this past week. I'm on Prisoner of Azkaban right now, and I'm enjoying reading them quite a bit. They are much deeper and more complex than I would have thought.

My one complaint about the books is that Rowling does a great job of building up tension, but I've been kinda let down by the climactic scenes. I think that's the only part that I've noticed that they're kids books - I've lost that bit of imagination to be really terrified when I get to the part where Harry's actually battling monsters and evil wizards.

My husband had read them all and seen all the movies. He really enjoyed them.

Me, no. I don't care for wizardry and all that stuff.

You will not regret reading these books.

The last book is, in my opinion, the best. But, DO NOT read them out of order or the one who's name must not be spoken will come and get you.

I just read all the books last spring (around my 30th birthday) and I thought they were fantastic. Definitely not just for kids, though you have to like wizards, magic, and such.

The books are great for anyone. The depth of her writing is very good and every detail comes into play. Also the books become less childish as they go on. The 6th book (Half-Blood Prince) is probably the darkest "children's book" you will ever read.

the first two books were decent, but the 3rd book and forward are incredible. You don't want to put them down, especially if you haven't seen the movie and don't know how it ends

I only watched the movies until shortly after I saw the 4th one. Once I saw the 4th one I had to know what happened next, so I started reading the books. I really enjoyed the books. I think having seen a few of the movies made the books more enjoyable. On the flip side, I didn't enjoy the 5th movie nearly as much.

In short, read the books.

The Harry Potter franchise is worth about 15 billion dollars. In a free market economy it's a pretty safe bet they're pretty good, even if you knew nothing else about them other than whether you liked that genre or not.
