Question about making a pergola

The pergola I want to make will span the courtyard of our entrance out front. However, one end of each plank of the pergola will need to connect to a decorative beam (2x4) and the other end will need to be fastened to the top of a brick wall. I am thinking that I need some sort of "U-shaped" mount for both the beam side and the brick wall side. Anyone got an idea of what I can use for the mounts and where I can find them? The decorative beams coming from our roof are actually at 45 degrees, so I might have to manipulate the mounts on that end. The mounts on the brick wall side would actually be mounted on top of the brick wall so that it stands up like a tuning fork where I can fashion the pergola plank in between the tines of the mount. This may sound quite nebulous, but I would appreciate any advice that can be derived from my best attempt at a descripton. Also, what is the best type of wood to use?

We used redwood at the Governor's Mansion. The grounds had a rather ornate set of pergolas, they had rotted away after 75 years. A crew came in around 1993 and replaced the main beams with solid redwood.
Outrageously expensive, but they are still standing strong.
If you need to get some ideas, take the tour.
