Question about getting a passport

My wife and I have decided to go to Playa De Carmen on April 9th(about 9 1/2 weeks from now). We are going to get our passports today. They say on there website to allow 6 weeks but I have heard horror stories about not getting your passports and not being able to get on the plane. Has anyone recently gotten a passport and if so how long did it take? Thanks.

I got one for my son a couple of months ago and it took about 4 weeks to receive it, without the extra fee for speeding things up. I'd probably pay that fee in your case just to be sure.

It is probably overkill, but you can get it expedited and turned around in a couple of days. I think I spend about $250 to have it done. Went through my travel agency and they hooked me up with an expediter.

they are usually very efficient.

if you want to be sure you can pay an extra 60 dollars and get it i believe in 2 days guaranteed

I would be absolutely stunned if you dont get it in time

One of my co-workers did an expedited renewal for potential overseas travel, with express shipping both ways. Two days later he did standard new passport applications for his kids, through the mail.

The new passports showed up two days before the expedited renewal (well under six weeks of processing time), even without the overnight shipping.

Yeah, you should be ok.

I just applied for a renewal as well as new ones for my kids. They said (iirc) that I could track the status on-line, but since I don't need them for about 5 months I didn't pay too much attention to that.

One other thing.

The lady at the Missouri City PO said it helps to fill out the emergency contact section. It just looks a bit fishy (or may be a flag) if that part is left blank. At the worst, it's just one more reason for a delay.

Here's a link to check your passport status. They say to wait 7 to 10 days.

Date items required to check status are: last name, date of birth, and last 4 digits of SSN.

Yes, go into a time machine and go back to when your passport was still valid and renew it then. Much easier that way.

We did ours for our son in December and it took about 4 weeks, too... then again, we did it at a "slower" post office the week before Christmas. No one was thinking about passports b/c they were too busy shopping for gifts. Now? Might be a different story...

where is the best place to get one done?

utmck, I don't know exactly where the "best" place is, but I went to my local post office (Sugar Land) and we got ours really fast. Like in 3 weeks. We also went to the Missouri City po for one, and that one is still being processed (but we went there 2 wks after we went to the Sugar Land po).

So, I would think that any post office that can handle passports would be just fine.
