Question about cell phone number

I have had the same cell number for 12 years. It is the only number that all of my friends/family/contacts have for me. I have also not had a landline phone at my house during the same 12 years.

My employer is giving me a Windows mobile device that will be used for voice service as well as a mobile GPS device to collect points for use in our GIS. Because it is being purchased on a government contract, I am unable to port my current, personal phone number to that phone.

Because of how I will use the device for work purposes, it requires that the phone have an unlimited voice/data package.

My question is, should I keep my personal phone number?

I am considering porting my personal cell number to a landline (VOIP) phone and bundle with my cable/internet package. I've already checked and it is possible to port that number to that phone since both are AT&T services. This will also allow me to forward any calls to my old personal cell number to the new business phone, though text messages would obviously not forward, so those that text me would need to know the new number.

Is it worth $30/month to hold on to the phone number I've had forever? Even with paying the $30/month, I am still coming out $60/month ahead for getting rid of all of my other mobile service that I am currently paying. Or should I just give up the old personal phone number all together? Carrying two phones is really not something I am interested in either.

I know this will be a matter of personal preference, but I am curious what the wisdom of HornFans will bring to the table.

Keep your personal phone. You can use the voice mail to direct people to your new number. If you are ever asked to leave the company the first thing they will take back is your phone, leaving you to scramble to get a new phone plan and number.

i've never understood why people try to hold on to phone numbers. $30 a month = $360 a year. worth it? i can think of some other things to do with $360.

get a new number, send a mass txt to your ppl that you have a new number. done.

Seriously. Attachment to a phone number is mystifying to me. If it is easy to port then sure, I would do it. If it is a hassel in any way, no chance. Everyone has numbers stored in their phones, and it takes people 60 seconds to update that.

It's just a number.
