Question about buying new tires...

I've always just gone to Discount for my vehicles and paid what they said was the price for "comparable" tires. I've always felt they seemed expensive.
Now, the GF needs 4 new for her sweet *** Saturn Vue and she asked me about how much she should pay and where. I told her that I know all about this stuff but to hang on for a bit because I really had to take this phone call about renewing my gym membership and that i'd call her back...
So, how do you/can you negotiate tires and where should we shop?

I was in discount the other day after a blowout.

While there I heard a salesman negotiate on the phone with some caller. He took about 200 bucks off the price right there on the phone.

ND,
are you talking about locally owned small shot types or something like sears, or what? we're in houston, so we should have options.

They will price match tires from the internet, right? Hit up Tirerack.com and find the tire you want. Get the price and compare with them. If it is a well known tire brand to include the likes of Kumho, they will probably stock it. Tell them or show them the price and go from there.

Keep in mind that Tirerack does not include the mounting, balancing and stuff like that, just the tire.

i'm looking at all of these links guys so thank you. stupid question #2 (or is it 3?):
do any of the prices include labor? i'm seeing $95 per on the discount site and then $70 on loop's link. loop says that's tire only, is the discount price tire only too?
what should you expect in labor per tire?

Well, if Discount's "price" includes labor then there is something else it does NOT include. It's never THE price.

And yes, Admiral, I was thinking of mom and pop outfits. I deleted the post because it was offensive. Discount offers a valuable commodity in thier hazard warranty, but it only matters if you don't have a blowout on the highway where it usually happens. They are everywhere so you might have access if you are in a city with a Discount (like probably the vast majority of people who buy tires). I used to buy just one tire from them, planning to tell them that it was THEIR tire that went bad out of four (they don't have serial numbers or anything), but the issue just never came up in 25 years.

A tire is a tire and it shouldn't cost you more than about $5-10 per tire to get them mounted AND balanced. It's often free. My wife won't buy Doritos at a Walmart thinking that the Walmart Doritos (or whatever) are somehow lower class than HEB Doritos. I don't give a rat's *** where I get my Doritos.

I have purchased 4 sets of tires in the last 3 months and I got the best deal every time at a non-chain shop here in SA.

I cannot answer for him but it can't be more than 10 bucks a tire, right? You may want to call your local Super Wal-Mart to see what they charge. Add into the cost any shipping and handling.

Costco is another good option for tires. They frequently run promotions for $70 off a set. If they don't have the tires you want in stock they can order just about anything. The price includes mount/balance/nitrogen/road hazard/rotation/repairs for the life of the tire. It's also convenient to have your tires rotated while doing your regular shopping at Costco.

I can't remember all the details but I decided on sams club and got the 70k miile bf goodrich.
