Question about bill due dates

Generally, if a bill is due on a certain day, is it that it has to be in their hands by that day or post-marked by that day? I'm trying to get better at paying bills on time and stuff and this would be good info to know. Thanks in advance.

Pretty sure it is supposed to be in their hands on the due date. I am horrible about getting checks out on time too; I always tell myself I should start paying them as they come in. Instead I do a batch on about the 10th of the month, at which point half of them are already late.

Definitely needs to be there before the due date..

And one thing to recognize, most of the credit card companies these days have terms that allow them to jack up your rate the first time you miss a due date. That is reason alone to pay your bills when you get them...

the best practice is to write the check the day it arrives (if you have the funds and the amount is relatively small), or have it set up to pay automatically. I dislike paying early, but if I don't, I forget about it.

Use your calender program on your computer to have monthly reminders so they will jog your memory to check the particular status of the bill. Might seem stupid but it works.

You mean people still use checks to pay bills? I pay every bill I have either online or over the phone which cuts out transit time. Or course, I only have like 4 bills.

I think in general if it is a credit card they are going to penalize you as soon as it is one day past due. Especially if it is just some generic Visa or MasterCard you got in the mail. If it is the phone company, electric, cable etc. I don’t think they are going to do anything if you get the bills in with in a day or two of being due. Same for cell phones.

my Capital One card gives no grace period. If it's not in their hands and processed by the due date a late charge pops up on the next month's bill.

If you're running late and it's a credit card from a major bank like Chase you can pay your bill at the drive-thru.

pay every bill you canb online if ther eis no fee involved.

I routinely pay my mortgage vis Federal Experess 2nd day as they have falsified reception of prior USPS mailings.

ALL credit card companies will falsify the receipt dat of your payment.... because it is profitable to do so. If you miss a payment you can immediately go to default rates of 25% plus. Sort of the same benevolent deal the Pharmaceutical com apines get for their contribution from our Congess/Senate.

Agree on definitely paying on time. I have done battle with one of my CC companies because we basically pay a month ahead (their due date is way earlier in the month than all the others so we have no choice). One month the online payment went through 1 day earlier than usual and they automatically credited it to the statement just ending instead of the upcoming billing period - so a month later I got a delinquent notice and they jacked up my rate from 1.99 to 23%. After arguing with several different supervisors over the course of a half-hour, I managed to get them to restore my account to its prior status (I had been a customer in good standing with on-time payments for years). But it was an incredible hassle.
