Quality of Ikea furniture?

I have a bare room that could use a couch and an armchair. A guy that I met through a friend has a 9 month old Ikea set for sale at a pretty decent price.

I don't shop at Ikea. In fact, that warehouse makes me nauseous for some reason. However, I do have to say that some of the furniture doesn't look too bad at all.

How's the quality of furniture there?

The pieces are in pretty good shape and since they're leather, I think a good cleaning would take care of the horrible images that my wife has when considering a purchase of used furniture. I also don't normally buy black leather, but since I can do whatever I want with this room I won't hear it from the wife. Just need something besides office chairs for sleeping, er working.

My experience has been that it is stylish but not of good quality. Kind of flimsy. I haven't purchased anything from there in many years though, so things may have changed.

never bought a couch or anything from IKEA, but i have gotten a few other items (a desk and a side table) that have worked out great.
for the price that most of their stuff goes at, it's not like you're making a huge investment that needs to last forever, anyway.

If it is a good price, don't do it. A great price, sure, if you don't plan on keeping it a long time. Their accesories and stuff like that are stylish and okay. Bigger things, not really. Not trash but not long lasting under normal use.

Makes sense. It may seem like a deal at 50% off, but it was most likely overpriced in the first place anyway.

So it looks like I'll be spending the morning at the smorgasbord of furniture dealers on Western. It's scum central for salesmen, but you just can't beat the selection available down the half mile or so strip.

The stuff that you don't have to put together yourself is actually bad at all. I just replaced a couch and two chairs from Ikea that I bought back in the summer of 1998, and they both lasted that time with no problems and about average wear and tear. I was just starting law school and really couldn't afford much else.

For $400 total, I couldn't refuse. In comparison to the crap I was considering from "discount" stores, I think I did alright.

On the other hand, there's no way in hell I'd pay $2k for this stuff brand new. That I'll never understand.
