Riley Ferguson ..... Coffeyville Community College (Coffeyville, KS)
3-star ..... QB ..... 6-3/190

Recruited out of high school and signed with Tennessee, hence the photo. Transferred shortly after to Coffeyville.

Coach Gilbert flew up to North Carolina and met with Ferguson on Sunday, Dec 13 just before the Dead Period began. The staff will meet today to decide if they will extend an offer. Reports are that Ferguson plans on making a decision this week, but a UT offer could change his time line.

Coach Mattox used to be the OC at Ferguson's JC.

Per Scout:
Ferguson is a natural playmaker at the quarterback position who trusts his ability to put the ball where it needs to be and he will press the action. He has good arm strength and can fit the ball into tight spaces. Accuracy may have been a point of concern coming out of high school, but hs completion rate in 2015 is on an elite of the elite type of level. Not a dual-threat, but is mobile enough to roll the pocket, work outside the pocket, or make a play on the ground when a play breaks down. Should be able to come in and make a big impact at the P5 level.

Texas had been in contact with Ferguson prior to Gilbert's arrival. Ferguson said he had been in touch with Jay Norvell. He said the visit today kind of came out of nowhere and was set up at the last minute.

He has taken visits to Arkansas State and Memphis. Both have offered, along with Iowa State and Temple.

Gilbert told Ferguson the UT staff would meet on Monday to decide if Texas will extend an offer. If the Longhorns do offer, a date of January 12 was discussed for a possible official visit.

Ferguson said he very well make a decision by the end of this week. When I asked if a Texas offer would cause him to delay that decision, he said he's not sure and would have to see how he feels. He'll be enrolling at whatever school he chooses in January.

Gilbert told him about the offense he'll be running at Texas and Ferguson feels he'd fit in well. Gilbert said it will be a lot of run/pass option stuff, lots of formations, throwing the ball a lot, up-tempo.

[Per a poster on another site]

Norvell began "following" Ferguson before Gilbert was hired.

Good pocket awareness and flowing away from pressure while keeping eyes downfield. Live arm too. Would be a solid pick-up for sure. Gotta love how Gilbert wasted no time hunting for a better QB to insert asap.

That's what I was wondering, if Gilbert pushed for a JUCO to get some immediate depth.

I’m actually feeling hopeful that we could see some effective moves towards the improved offense that we need.

After watching that kid's tape and realizing what the new offense demands in it's QB...the depth would come from what we already have. This kid is far ahead of Heard and Swoopes in several areas of passing ability. Little doubt he'd beat those two out for the job in Gilbert's offense.

He has some issues with his mechanics (all arm throws from the pocket), but not as bad as VY's was.

Does seem to have a grasp of the offense (some version of which Gilbert will use). Worth a scholarship - yes. A sure bet to be the ND game starter - no; but could be depending on how he compares with the returning QB's plus Buechele in the new offense.

Per another poster today:

247 saying Ferguson has some sort of upper body injury and that it may be scaring teams off.
Hummmm.

Another example of our coach waiting too long to pull the switch. Have they not figured out we need a QB now!
No, an example of schools backing off because of an apparent injury as reported by others.

Here's his complete offer list:
  1. Memphis
  2. Arkansas State
  3. Iowa State
  4. Temple

Maybe our coaches want to get Buechele in here without any hiccups. Signing another QB to start next year could create another prima donna problem. It's an issue... I'm not saying it's valid or that is how the team should be managed, but you never know.

I agree. You want the best guy on the field but you also have to be careful to manage the other guys on the roster who may be ready to contribute in a big way next year. Thinking mostly of Heard but Swoopes could still have an important role to play.

Guy had pretty good tape. Between the abundance of colorful arm artwork, earrings, chippy responses about our interest, really light offer list, and Gilbert delaying the offer...doubt he was right fit for Texas. I'm gonna trust Gilbert made a good decision not to jump on this one.

So, our current choices are a TRUE Freshman or one of the two worst passing QBs in major college ball. (Hell, Baylor was forced to play a wide receiver at QB and he showed more knowledge of when to throw the ball away rather than take a sack than our starter did after 9 games!) A sure way to get Strong fired after next year. Injuries heal. But, maybe they have something else planned.

Go back to your OU boards.

You seem to be a little lacking in knowledge of the UT quarterback situation. You failed to mention our two red-shirt freshman QB's. Gilbert will have 5 potential QB candidates to choose from during spring practice. Hopefully there will be at least one who will fit his system well.

And you may not have noticed but the longhorns beat both your Sooners and Baylor this year, even with what you call the two worst passing QB's in major college ball.

Oh, i feel so bad... I've been accused of being a Sooner. Quite a dick remark Hippy.

As I recall Baylor was playing a wide receiver at QB when we beat them and we didn't win enough games to make even the Car Wash Bowl. (OU game was fun but did not count as but one win). The good teams start a red-shirt Junior.

I'm sure we're exploring other options. Gilbert knew he had a tight window to lock this down. The kid intended to decide within a few days of Gilbert flying there.

Based off film and Norvell's input, Gilbert was interested and scheduled an abrupt face-to-face knowing time was of the essence. After that we asked for transcript and drug our feet. Even the kid said a few days later he hadn't heard anything.

If still interested after their in-person, a good OC like Gilbert would've received and cleared the transcript the same day, met with Strong, and extended the offer.

There was something off about this guy and it's my belief the in-person meeting revealed that. Tatted up arms (even had as a Junior in HS), double earrings, and smug sounding unimpressed attitude when interviewed about Texas interest.

Smart money says he came across too rough around the edges for Gilbert's tastes. If he's gonna upset the current/incoming QB apple cart, the juice better be worth the squeeze in all aspects. We're in the market but not desperate enough to be careless.

My point is really not about this particular prospect. It is we need a real quartetback. WHY does Strong not have JC guy already committed?
