QB Futures

Please, no obligatory "Chiles should starts/shirts" comments...With Garrett Gilbert's verbal commitment to Texas, we're locking up our future at QB for the foreseeable future, however, a lot of folks are hoping to nab Russell Shepherd as well. Comments and Evaluation:

John Chiles
is only guaranteed one year as the full-time starting quarterback. His (albeit limited) performances last year don't warrant him the starting job in 2008 and he'll be hard pressed to dislodge Colt, a 4-year started, in 2009. So, unless Greg Davis and Mack Brown are willing to run a 2-QB offense this season, we need to look to utilize Chiles somewhere (WR, RB, KR, etc) in addition to under center.

Assuming we get both Garrett Gilbert and Russell Shepherd
, it's going to set up a bigger controversy than Applewhite vs. Simms. In order to not waste 4-years with one of them, one will have to red shirt. But how do you tell one of the nations biggest prospects he'll have to wait his turn behind another one. Whoever starts first has the inside track forever. Clearly Shepherd is the one more able to convert, but I don't think he'd go for that. Even if one takes a shirt, it only guarantees them one year as a starter.

What's best for the team? How do we get the best players on the field and take advantage of their skills? From what we know of Chiles, Gilbert, and Shepherd now, who will make the best QB, and who might be able to convert and contribute elsewhere?

I haven't seen Kinne yet and am interested to see what kind of mobility he has.

Colt likely will be the starter in 08 but Chiles/Harris will likely get real playing time this season. Harris has had injury problems and that is his biggest question mark right now. The depth chart looks full and even fuller in 09 but if Harris isn't healthy then Kinne floats into that #3 spot....then once the season starts if either Chiles or McCoy have injuries then he is the #2 guy and you always need a #2.

I wouldn't mind seeing 2 different offenses this season based on the mobility of the QB in at the time. You could have a McCoy/Kinne package and then a Chiles/Harris package. If Gilbert or whichever other QB we get this year redshirts in 09 then we will have the same QB situation next year.

I don't think there will be a big problem as long as the QB's are patient and can wait their turn and as long as Mack finds ways to rotate them in more.

Nice post.

My hope is that for the Rice, FAU, and UTEP games Colt plays the first half and the first series of the third quarter and then Chiles and Harris split the second half evenly. I'd really like to see what Harris can do and was disappointed he didn't get the opportunity last year.

GJ Kinne could be odd-man out and may be the most likely to transfer as he was a late addition to last year's class. His HS passing stats were outrageous (TD:INT like 50:2 or something) and it would be nice to see him get a chance.

Gilbert is pretty clearly the future and if Sheppard also commits then I would expect some attrition here. A position switch wouldn't be out of the question for a couple of these guys. I mean, OU recruited Kinne as a LB and Chiles and Harris could probably play any skill position on offense that they wanted (although WR is getting awfully crowded).

The Kinne factor is an interesting one. I think he is really just getting a look over for unfair reasons. We don't know how he is developing nor what he has improved on or learned. I like what I saw of him on film but never saw him in person in HS. But something about him screams I AM A WINNER and that he has moxy. I am not saying he should start or that he will but I think we are lucky to have him.

Harris is a bad *** waiting to happen. He makes the passes that Chiles does not now. His speed is on the same level or damned close and he has an extra year. I hope we never need to put any of our qb's in due to another getting hurt but if we do and Harris gets a shot, I think he wow's us.

I am stoked at our qb position that was just recently a liability or item of concern.

A lot of people said that about Colt and his star rating v. what level he played on. Then again we were thin at the spot but something tells me that he would have taken on all comers. I am not saying Kinne will earn the spot either. I just think that over speculation by us, the ones who know the least, is sometimes futile. But it keeps us busy I suppose.

He very well may transfer. But then again, so may anybody else or too many. We've been there before as well. This may be one of the more important spring scrimmages in a long time. If Mack truly holds all positions as open for the taking and with new coord. in place it should be fun.

You think Sheppard will come to Texas with Gilbert already committed? Have we offered him. He might be thinking we have already made up our mind on a future QB with the Gilbert commitment.

Mack's had some very good things to say about Kinne in his redshirt year. He will be in the mix for playing time next season, and I figure he knows it, so I doubt he tranfers.

Chiles and Harris will likely get more touches in the spring and fall, and in game situations next season, but Colt still gets the majority of plays.

Regarding Gilbert and Shepard, if we're lucky enough to get both, and if Shepard's adamant about getting a chance at QB, Mack will give it to him. If you have that kind of talent willing to commit, you don't turn it away.

It looks like the QB position is gonna be well-stocked for the foreseeable future here.

I find it hard to be confident that we land Shepard after Gilbert's commitment. I don't follow recruiting closely at all, but obviously Shepard would have to REALLY want to be a Longhorn to commit in the same class that already has a 5* QB.

That said, I REALLY want Shepard. I love the dynamism of a dual-threat QB. I also want to see Harris and Chiles often in the early games. If one of them proves that he can be consistently accurate then I think we have to mix up it up and force defenses to game plan for 2 QBs.

Nobody wants a Quarterback controversy, but if it will help us win games then I am all for rotating QBs situationally.

If these guys are team players, they will wait their turn. We could be in a great position to be like USC, where year in-year out, a new stud QB steps up and runs an efficient offense.

We're Texas, We're getting there...

Exactly,
other schools take 2/3 QBs all the time. Brantly went to UF with at least 1 if not 2 QB alread comitted to UF at the time.
also, Shepard is a QB and Ath like Chiles so he will get his chance to play QB and if he is good enough great, if not he can change positions.
It is likely that Shepard will/should redshirt b/c he has longer to go as a passing QB, at least from the video i have seen.

Also, why are some of you sooo afraid of a QB controversey. it does NOT have to be Simms/Applewhite again. Look at ND, USC, UF and many other school, they dont have it that bad. yeah we did once but we can have multiple good QBs, isnt that the idea?
do you see a QB controversey at ND now that Crist and Calusen are there, no. the better play plays.

Just a general statement about this thread - let's not get into a discussion of who should/will transfer. If you want to talk about who you think is going to step up, that's one thing. But saying that so and so is going to leave or should leave isn't acceptable.

Don't you think listing people, who aren't even on our roster, much less even enrolled in college, to be a little foolhardy?

Gilbert could ditch us for anyone anytime, nothing is for sure. Shepherd, well that is is just wishful thinking. Time to face reality.

Colt will start this year, and Harris and Chiles will back him up. From what I have personally seen in practice I can't see Chiles starting at QB long term. Harris isn't much better, in the spring game last year their passing stats were pretty bad. We all know what Chiles did on the year passing.

I think Kinne will be second string at the end of this year or by 09. Chiles wont even be a QB and Harris will be third string.

1. Kinne will not be a transfer threat. He came to Texas to be here for five years regardless of his status on the depth chart.
2. Gilbert will be here this time next year. So, Gilbert and Shepherd will be freshman in 2009 not 2010.

The best thing about having talent is the level of competition is riased and they all bring out the best in each other.

PacSER, why so confident that Kinne won't transfer?

I'd be shocked if the 2009 season opens with a roster that includes all these names: Colt, Sherrod, Chiles, Kinne. It just makes sense. These guys want to play.

The same reason Nordgren never transfered. They are Texas football players who have no desire to play anywhere else. Kinne came here to be a part of Texas football. He will compete, no doubt, but fully intends to be here for five years.

A lot of people here are overlooking Kinne. He will be at least #3 on the depth chart this spring. If Chiles does not improve his accuracy, KInne could go to 2. I think Sherrod is the best transfer possibility.
