Q about my TW HD-DVR and Philips flat screen HDTV

ok, i have a Philips "real flat" tv (like a sony vega) that is HD compatible. I got the Time Warner HD-DVR. Now, all this time I've had the HD-DVR hooked up to my TV and have been thinking I've been watching HD shows - when I go to HD channels and programming is in HD (like watching Lost, CSI, Law and Order, etc), it seems like much better quality and looks great, so I've thought I've been watching HD.
So, then a friend of mine noticed that my box is showing that the format is in 480i instead of 1080i (which would be the HD setting). He said that HD is even better than what I am on right now (although I guess my HD channels are "enhanced"). When I try to switch to 1080i, i get this weird staticky picture, like lines and bars across the screen. I'm pretty sure all my wires are correctly hooked up - it's just color coding.
I've tried just about everything I can think of as far as settings. The Time Warner tech support is completely useless. I've looked through my TV manual and can't see what I am doing wrong. Has anyone ever had this experience? Can anyone give me any tips or ideas?
I'm content to watch my "enhanced" picture, but if I have HD capacity I might as well be using it!

maybe you need to use the highest quality cable from your TW HD-DVR to your Philips. Like I'm using a DVI cable as oppose to component from my TW box to my Sony.

Try 720p. That might be the only thing your TV can show.

Or, hold down the info and guide buttons at the same time and the HD setup menu should come up.

when i do the guide/info thing to get into HD setup, when I try 1080i the screen goes into that snowy picture. is 720 an option? i'm not sure that that worked either

What channels are you watching?

My LCD tv has an autodetect and sometimes it detects regular, sometimes 480i, sometimes 720i, and sometimes 1080i.

Different networds and local startions broadcast at different resolutions.

have you looked on the Phillips site for help?

720p is definitely an option if its the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 or 8300. My Samsung's native resolution is 720p, and I was having some synch issues with the audio and video when I had it set to 1080i. Give it a shot.
