Pythons in Florida ...

i hate to say it, but it seems like it might be important to start extermination procedures right? they are foreign predators right? just seems like they may be causing very serious issues long term and that would be tragic.

Yes, the pythons need to be controlled - if possible.

More importantly we need to address the cause of the problem. It's silly that we allow people to import anything and everything in the pet trade and the garden trade.

Hurrican Andrew in '92 destroyed a facility that housed hundreds of snakes. That may have jump started the population too.

It's a damn shame what's happening to the everglades. I wonder if it will stop in florida or spread.

I grew up in Amarillo and my family went to Palo Duro canyon lots of times. Glad I never saw anything like that.

Sweet mother of god that picture has to be photoshopped. That is the most terrifying thing I have ever seen in my entire life. We should nuke that snake pit.

"Snakes. Cool.

I say let the Pythons have the everglades. Cool."

I think snakes are cool too. We used to catch 'em in Louisiana mostly king snakes, hognose and grass snakes, but not this species in the Everglades. They are not native and will change the balance in the ecosystem. Not cool. Too many knuckleheads keeping them as pets is not a good thing.

It is rare that an introduced species does not harm the balance of a natural ecosystem. The pythons in Florida are a good example of this. Attempting to eradicate them may be impossible. It's like fire ants, kudzu vines, house sparrows, Norway rats, etc. They shouldn't be in ecosystems that did not evolve without them, because there are not sufficient natural predators, or natural food sources (that other species depend upon, at least).
They need to be killed, but how would this be accomplished?

A few year ago a boa constrictor or python was fished out of the Sabine River near Evadale. It was full of turtle shells, as I recall the story. I have tried to find it on the interwebs to no avail. There is also a picture circulating on the web allegidly taken on the Sabine near Newton that shows quite a large snake that does not appear to be native. It could be shopped.

Gatoroid!!!!

They shouldn't have killed that gator. I don't know where he was taken, but if in Florida, he could probably help control the pythons.

I read that alligator was on a cattle farm and lots of cattle parts were found in the water. I think the pythons live in the Everglades.

Lee Lightsey, the man who shot the alligator, is now walking back how big it was. Maybe some photoshopping going on there or some use of "perspective" tricks.
