'Put Partisanship Aside'

Good post pharmd. I disagree that raising taxes will raise revenues, especially during economic downturns. However, I think compromise is the only way that something meaningful can actually get done.

On the other hand, I 100% disagree with Roger's point.
The tea party serves its function by keeping the runaway spending at the forefront of the conversation and forces the problem to be addressed. And when politicians act like politicians and make false claims of addressing the problem when in fact the problem is simply pushed down the road, it is the tea party that brings the truth to the american public. I understand that the tea party is the enemy of Huffington Post readers, however, I am hopeful that even the most liberal will learn that entitlement cuts are necessary to attack the US' spending problem and the tea party is the only group courageous enough to deliver that message.

The problem with the tea party is that they are too ideologic. They will not support a bill b/c it has some tax increases even though it has larger spending cuts than the one they are in favor of. I agree that they have served a purpose but I am not sure that they have really good ideas on how to get things done.

It is true that they were noticably absent during Bush administration. But I think it is more that they were just fed up to the point that they came into existence under Obama. I would like them to actually be their own party though and stop hanging on to the purse strings of the GOP.

As far as partisanship goes, the Tea Party has been every bit as responsible for this as anyone else. But I more blame the GOP in how it became the "party of no". And the Democrats for not pulling the Republican leaders into discussions earlier on in Obama's administration. The GOP felt left out and thus took to this childish response of simply voting "no" for everything.

Politicians of both parties have used the tax code and dollars confiscated from working Americans, small businesses and corporations to buy votes for decades. For some time now they have been buying votes with dollars they don't.........the Tea Party comes along, calls them on it and draws a line in the sand and they are the ideologues? Wow.

As usual the left results in name calling. Gecko hit the nail on the head. Government growth is out of control, both parties are to blame. I no longer consider myself a Republican, actually never did. I am a conservative and right now the Tea Party is what I stand for, the government has been out of control for longer than most of our lives and it ends now!!!!

No compromise!!! End government mismanagement and unnecessary growth now!!!!

Spending cuts you are talking about, please......read about how these spending cuts are supposed to be implemented.

The major things that need to happen and change are:

1.) Tax laws
2.) Term Limits
3.) Budgeting policies
4.) Defense Procurement
5.) Repealing Obamacare

Those are my 5 top issues right now.

The Tea Party is right on the budget, but Roger makes a good point. Where was the Tea Party when Bush was racking up obscene deficits and pissing money away like there was no tomorrow? They weren't doing anything.

My worry is that if the Republicans oust Obama and take complete control on Capitol HIll, the Tea Party will assume everything is OK with Obama gone and trust the GOP to do the right thing. We know what happens when nobody is watching the GOP. They spend money like crazy just like Democrats do and dole out corporate welfare to the business community. That's not a real improvement.

This bill, like just about everything this prez has done...save for killing osama, is bad. NO MORE TAXES!!!! You don't get to raise taxes until you can show you SPEND LESS than you take in!

He still does not get it!

One thing I just cant ever understand from some of the you is this argument about how someone protesting something now is somehow less relevant because they weren't protesting it earlier. Who gives a **** if they did or didn't make noise when Bush was President. Times are massively different now and seem to be getting worse.

If you read a guy like Roger35, you would think he believes we really dont have a debt/spending problem. We all agree that we do (I hope we do). The repubs and dems have ignored the problem and made it worse for years. At least a group is actually trying to do something about the problem.

You can disagree with them all you want (I dont actually know any tea party members) but what they are standing for is basic common sense. If it would make you guys feel better, 90% of the conservatives on this board agree that Bush was part of the debt/spending problem.

It would be one thing if the dems would suggest a solution, but they won't. The highest ranking one, BO, won't even submit a freaking budget. He won't endorse any hard cuts on record or on paper (he talks about them a lot- kind of like a unicorn-often discussed but never seen).

Still amazes me that BO appointed a supposed non-partisan debt panel and tasked them with coming up with a plan and then he just completely ignored their findings and recomendations. The fact that the debt ceiling is predicated on another comittee is just laughably stupid.
