Push mowers

Anyone use a push mower? And do you recommend it?

I have a moderate area of grass to maintain, about 10yds by 30yds, or less.

I too have a small yard. I find it relaxing to mow the yard. I don't have self-propelled but I do have the oversize back wheels that make pushing easier.

Don't forget to edge. It's the coup de gras for finer lawn care.

It's the electric weedeater I despise.

I have a newly bought push mower. Large back wheels, no extra propulsion. It's 4.75 HP, so it's small enough to be easy to push and powerful enough to handle the thick grass we've got (orchard? it's not the thin bermuda stuff) without having to muscle it through any overgrown patches. The larger back wheels do make a difference. And I can get through the smallish front yard and very large backyard on less than one tank of gas. I went with the mulcher mower instead of a bagger.

My parents have a Honda mower with self propel that they bought in 1989 and the thing still runs like a champ.

Since your yard is small, just get an electric mower. Light, economical, and earth friendly.

I replied about one of these in another thread. I bought one and loved it. It was so nice not having to worry about gas, starting or charging. I could use it late at night or early in the morning. It worked great on the St Augustine lawn we had. It would cut plush bermudagrass nicely, as well. It did not do well on weeds with long stalks like dallisgrass or Johnson grass.

I have manual push mower and I love it. Very easy to just grab the thing and do the grass quickly. And for some reason I find it relaxing, not like with powered mower which seemed more like a chore. That may sound a bit corny, but it's true. Also you can use it any time of day without worrying about bothering the neighbors.

If I had a huge yard I might feel different, but for a small yard they're perfect. The only possible problem that I have is that I think mine is due for a blade tightening/sharpening and I'm not sure where I can get that done.

I think mine was about $80 at Home Depot.

I have one that i bought in 2001 at Home Depot for a townhouse in Houston. I left it with the tenant when I moved out 2 years ago, but he hires pros. Anyway, I am selling the house this month and would be happy to sell it to you. PM me if you're interested.

It is a 20 in Scotts

I also have an electric mower, and am a big fan. It takes a little getting used to the cord, but not having to mess w/ gasoline, oil, and all the other crap is a huge plus.
