Push-mowers vs. self-propelled mowers

Just wanted to see if hornfans can assist w/ recommendations on push-mower vs. self-propelled mowers? My yard: fairly small...around 5000 sq ft and uneven. Side yard has quite a bit of slope and, too, is uneven. I'm looking to see what the best bang for the buck is in the $250 - $350 range. Any recommendations? Anything that I should absolutely stay away from? If this has been discussed before, please share link. Thanks in advance!

I have a craftsman and love it. Change the oil twice a season, plug and blade annually, and you'll never have a problem. Self-propulsion has worked flawlessly for 6 seasons now. I have a 60-200 foot front lawn and 60-150 foot black lawn. Great deals on them now at the end of the season too.
 
One thing you should absolutely stay away from is a push-mower. If you don't get a self-propelled on that size lawn you are either Superman or an idiot, and my guess is you're not Superman.

I also used to have a Craftsman a few years ago when we had a lawn that needed mowing. It worked fine except for when I burned my hand horribly and when my wife ran it without oil for awhile. Both were user error.
 
Oh geez.. a push lawn mower.

our family moving from CA to Texas when i was a boy. The push mower made the move as well. It took a whole season for me to convince my Dad that grass in Texas was near impossible to mow with a push mower. I suffered that summer before he finally relented and bought a self propelled mower.
 
Hard to beat a self-propelled Honda or John Deere, but they're outside your budget. Consumer Reports does a thorough report every year or two, but don't have it handy.
 
I have a Scotts self propelled mulcher. The thing is indestructible and starts up everytime. Bought it used for $250.00
 
Self-propelled is the only way to go. I have a honda that is proabably 7 to 10 years old that sat in my aunts garage for years. It starts first pull everytime. I will never own anything else.
 
Get rear wheel drive if you can, far superior to front drive, you wouldnt necessarily think so, but it definitely is.
 
I have had good luck with products from Lowes--Troy built-- self propelled and a kick *** weed eater with multiple attachment-- hedge trimmer and limb cutter
 
I don't really understand the need for a self-propelled mower. A power mower is not really that difficult to push, and the exercise would be good for most people.

A few weeks ago I mowed the front yard with one of these:

I have an Earthwise electric mower. It's not self-propelled but it only weighs 98 lb. No oil. No gas. No maintenance. I love it.

My property is 1/3 acre. I have a berm around one side of my pool. The berm is the only difficult thing to mow but that's because one of the palm trees kinda gets in the way. It would probably be just as challenging with a self-propelled mower.
 
bought a cheap push mower from Wal-Mart in '04. It was a return. The engine always "missed out" from the beginning. Not too bad, just a little, occasionally it would get bad, though. Until this year, that is. I finally got smart, broke out the WD-40 sprayed all over the thing, figured it couldn't hurt. Now it runs like a champ. all out. BTW, I've got a yard with a big downslope, probably 6000 sf.

Won't hurt you to push a mower. MIght relieve stress.

Cost, I wanna say $89 + tax. no oil changes, nothing except put the gas in.
 
i think some people may be getting confused with the terms.

a. motorized push mower
b. motorized self propelled mower
c. push mower (no motor)

I always figured if you are going to buy a power mower, might as well be self propelled. I can't see the benefit of not having it self propelled.
 
I've owned my snapper for 12 years. Had it in for routine maintenance 4 times in that span and still runs like a champ. It is a B&S Diamond powered motor with belt driven rear-wheel propulsion.

If you ask guys that mow lawns for a living, they like snappers.

I own a motorized 6.5HP Sears Craftsman push mower. I mulch always. My lot is ~0.2 acres so not big. I cannot imagine at my age (30s) needing a self-propelled for the size of my yard.

I actually bought my mower 3 years ago for $115 from some retired Aggie in Round Rock who buys old mowers and repairs them. Real nice guy and he had about 10 lawnmowers in his backyard... Hondas, Snappers, Sears, Lawn Boy.
