Purchasing digital episodes of TV Shows

I'm looking into purchasing digital version of TV-shows instead of the DVDs (which is what I do now). Before diving in myself, I was wondering if anyone on here did that, and could give me some feedback.

First of all, is there any difference between the files downloaded from Amazon v. iTunes?

What file format are the shows in?

Can the shows be watched on as many devices as I want, or is there a limit?

Can the shows be burned to DVD or blu-ray?

Are there any things that you just love about downloading TV episodes instead of watching them live/tivo/hulu/dvd etc.?

I regret buying "the wire" from I tunes, as I cannot watch them on my tv.

For the record, I have an Apple TV so I won't have trouble watching it. I just want to know if there's a limit to the number of devices I can watch it on.
