So using my iPhone I purchased a few albums thru the iTunes phone app. I used my iTunes account. I have that same account authorized on my pc. I plug in my iphone, and i can see the songs on my phone, but itunes wont let me copy those albums to my library. I have my iphone set for manual mgmt of my music and videos, so i expected to be able to just drag the stuff off my phone into my itunes library so my wife could add it to her phone...

what setting am i overlooking? or any suggestions?

You may be spelling things improperly and the phone cannot recognize your requests.

Never had that problem, but I've never tried transferring purchases that way either. I right click on my iPhone and click "transfer purchases."

Only time they don't transfer is when I've lost track of which laptop I'm using (don't have iTunes account enabled on my work laptop).

I've got itunes on my laptop and just got an iphone yesterday. In my laptop, I've got a ton of music I put onto itunes that I downloaded from limewire. I tried to get those on my iphone last night but couldn't figure it out.

Can you only put songs that you bought FROM itunes onto your iphone?

Sure you can. I do it with music I've ripped from CDs and movies I've ripped from DVDs, in addition to iTunes purchases.

I'm not in a position to pull up iTunes right now, but IIRC you need to click on your iPhone in the navigation panel on the left, click on the music tab and click the checkboxes for which parts of your library will sync, then click sync or update or whatever it is down in the lower righthand corner of the iTunes window.

Also (and I'm sure you already know this, but...) check to make sure that you've imported your non-purchased .mp3s into your iTunes library. You can play .mp3s stored on your PC using iTunes without actually importing them into your library (if iTunes is your default music player).

I'll double check in iTunes when I'm in a position to get to a different computer.

I just tried it and it worked. If it doesn't work for you, you can also work around whatever issue it is by creating a playlist in iTunes and dragging the songs you want on your iPhone from your iTunes library to that playlist, then go through the same process in my previous post, but check the checkbox for the playlist you created instead of checking parts of your library or your whole library. It just worked both ways for me.

Yes, creating a playlist is the way. Songs dragged into a playlist are just pointers to the Library, so deleting from a playlist will not affect the original in the Library. Sync the playlists in iTunes and you're good to go.
