Punt blocks

My favorite play in all of football is the punt block. I don't think that anything in football changes the momentum more than a punt block. Michael Griffin's punt block in 2004 vs. A&M sparked our comeback and win. Michael Griffin's punt block in 2005 vs. A&M sealed the win vs. A&M. Tony Jeffrey's punt block vs. A&M in 2001 was the difference in a close win there.

Last year, I was sick to my stomach that we didn't get any punt blocks. But with Akina back to special teams, it is back.

By my count, we have 3 punt blocks in 2 games. Impressive. 1 by Earl Thomas. Who got the 2 during UTEP? I can't remember.

Not sure on the numbers this season, but I concur, there is no better way to change a game than PB. Not only does it demoralize the punting team, and give good field position, but it is about the best way to get a scoop and score. If we can get to one against OU/Mizzou we win those games.

Yeah, one of the most disappointing aspects throughout last season was the special teams play...lack of blocks and lack of returns for TDs.

I think Aaron Williams has the other 2 blocks.

We had a ton of true freshmen in back there. Cory Redding was actually on the punt protect team. Shortly I imagine.

Agree whole heartedly. Punt blocks are HUGE, espically when they get returned for six. I fully espect us to get several more this year. Akina has brought that fire back to these young db's who are on the special team line.

Aaron Williams partially blocked both kicks in the UTEP game.

Why do people even bother to run that stupid shield punting formation? Maybe it works better against other teams, but we blow that **** up easily. Not that I'm complaining I suppose, but if ever see Texas run it, I'll kill every single one of you.

I hate the shield, too, and it seems like everyone in high school and college is running it this year. Kind of like the rugby kick was 3 or 4 years ago...

Not sure if its my favorite play, but I love the block as well. I absolutely love the fact that we block more kicks than anyone else. I hope that the fact that we are such a threat to block one means the other team has to spend more time than usualy planning for it and the punter hurries his kicks.

Ed Cunningham said it best when he said that it is a sign that the NFL isn't doing it (shield protection). If it worked, the NFL would do it.

I was hoping the OP was going to say they loved the punt block. It is by far my favorite play in football. That play is such a momentum swinger. The sound of a punt block is unmistakeable.

The shield formation is a perfect example of coaches trying to overthink things. Let's see, I can block everyone at the line and force them to beat us off the snap, or I can let some of them get a running start at my stationary blockers in the backfield.
